Stopover in Singapore in August

by Lillian90 Online Now Mar 26, 2013 at 2:43 PM

Hi there :)

I'm going to Australia in July and I was thinking of doing a stopover in Singapore on my way home to Denmark.
I would only be there for 4-5 days, and was wondering if it is worth goitre there for such a short period of time? I'm thinking of going there because I want to go a place were I can relax by a pool or a beach and still see some sights, before going home, can you recommend anything in Singapore or anthother place to stop over for a few days just to relax?

Any suggestions are welcome, thanks!

And Singapore was also a choice because Qantas has a stopover there before flying to Europe, so it is very convenient travelvise :)

Singapore IS worth a stopover. Its a very small country/city and much can be seen and done in 4-5 days.

There is no beach (as  such) except for the man-made beach on Sentosa Island (which I do not enjoy because its just too crowded and commercial)

If you do want to have a 'beach break' you could take the fast ferry across to Bintan Island (i hour) maybe spend one night there

I would definitely stop over in S'pore if you have the time. 4-5 days would be plenty as it is a small country and some nice things to see. Relaxing on the beach would not really be something to do there but most all the major hotels have nice pools to relax. The shopping is excellent, the food is great and the zoo is worth the time. So many good places to visit.
Bring lots of money..S'pore is one of the most expensive countries in s.e.Asia.

Agree with above that 4-5 days are more than enough for a small place like Singapore. I think 3 days would be enough to see the major attractions, in my opinion. Lynne's idea is great too to head to Bintan or other islands in nearby Indonesia/Malaysia. Bintan is considered as a weekend getaway destination for Singaporeans, so it can be busier and more expensive over the weekend.

Actually, we found that Bintan (even on a weekend) was cheaper than Singapore

Singapore i excellent for short stopover. Get a hotel with a nice pool,There is Sentosa Beach and also the beach next to beach road . This is not much of a beach more like a park with a very thin strip of sand. Still I have swum from there.

Visit the river, Clark Quay, Boat Quay, Raffles Hotel. Little India, Chinatown, the Chinese Gardens, the botanical gardens, Mount Faber with its cable car, the zoo, the bird park, Orchard Rd and Bugis for shopping. There is plenty to do and its easy to get round if you get a hotel near thr MRT. Buses are easy to use, too.

I think Singapore is great for a stopover.
I really like the city and it's cosmopolitan and tropic atmosphere.
I could personally spend weeks there if the place was not so expensive and that is what i think is the problem.
The prices are very high in Singapore compared to other countries in the region.

But all in all i love to stop over in Singapore and currently do it 5-6 times a year myself when travelling Singapore Airlines between Asia and Denmark.

I meant the hotel price over the weekend in Bintan is more expensive compare to weekdays, not the prices in general on the island. :)

If the prices are higher than Singapore, they could go to Malaysia or stay at home, and the island wouldn't be developed in the first place. :)

Based on the answers provided above, I would also agree that 4-5 days in Singapore as a stopover is worth it, especially if you haven't being here before.

Book yourself a nice hotel with a pool and go easy. There are plenty of things to see and visit but don't try to cover too many if your aim is to relax. You may prefer to do your sightseeing and shopping at night when the weather is more favourable.

    Enjoy your stopover stay.

Singapore has no beaches. Its a shopping paradise. Alternatively, you can go to Johor, Malaysia at Pulai Desaru Beach Resort and Spa just accross Singapore. Your 4-5 days is worth spent if indeed you're looking for a hideway from the humdrums of everyday life simply to relax, and enjoy "lazy holiday". Pulai Desaru has swimming pool, beach, massage, sauna, spa and fitness center, wi-fi (with a fee) facilities. Here's the direction: from singapore changi airport proceed to changi ferry terminal/changi point (35 km) plus 30-minute land trip going to the resort. OR you can take the metrorail from airport and alight at Kranji bus terminal and from there take a bus going to johor via causway, then when you arrived at the immigration center at the city center in Johor, you can take a taxi going to the resort. The same route you'll be taking when you go back to Singapore. You'll going to have a ralaxing, re-charging 5-day affair!!!

Just to add a little to the above advises I stayed in Silcoso Beach resort which is much cheaper than others on the only beach based Sentosa Island. It's pool is great with natural spring water and beach just in front of it and don't forget to see the songs of the sea a laser light show the ludge ride and of course the Universal Studios.

    Hi everyone
Thanks for all the answers, seems like i will be able to fill in 4 days easily! Regarding the suggestions of going to either Johor, Malaysia or Bintan Island, will that cause any troubles with visas to Singapore and the stay there, since it is another country i would be going to for a trip?
I also do know that Qantas is teaming up with Emirates but it still takes me on a stopover in either Bangkok or Singapore on my way home if i don't want to spend another 500$ on the ticket, but thanks!

Do any of you know if you can go to the Infinity pool if you are not a guest at Marina Bay Sands?
And finally do any of you know of good reasonable priced places to stay, i'm not too keen on the idea of bunkbeds in the hostels, but other than that i'm not really fussy :)

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

You can find the right place with the right budget from the www.yoursingapore.com website. It's an official website hosted by the tourism board of singapore.

u can't enter the infinity pool if u are not a guest at MBS.. if u let us know your budget we can suggest some hotels.. for 4* ish hotel u can check Royal Plaza on Scott along Orchard Rd shopping belt or Parkroyal Pickering near Chinatown... for 3*ish hotels u can check Ibis Bencoolen or V Lavender... but of course there are many more hotels than this...

if u hold aussie passport u will not need visa to enter malaysia.. u can get visa on arrival at Bintan for USD10...
