Hi There, A query re accommodation north of Singapore. I will be leaving Pulau Gemia, having stayed in the Gem Island Resort for a few days then heading south to Singapore for my flight home. I have a few days 3 days to kill and don't want to go to Singapore itself. Is there anywhere north of Singapore that anyone could suggest for a couple of days while still being near enough to get to Changi Airport easy in a day? Any advice welcome :)
Malaysia is directly north: (Malacca lots to do// I think 2.5 hours) Johore Bahru (shopping 15 minutes)

Johre Baru, is it a border town, or has it merits worth a stay?

FYI Singaporeans escape to JB for their day's shopping and to Melaka for the weekend.. But coming down from the East Coast, you could do Cherating Village for a night enroute to SG and then JB for a night, so you can be close enough to SIN for your flight home.

Cherating Village sounds nice for a day or two with the river & turtle sanctuary. Johor Bahru sounds a wee bit more peaceful than the hustle & bustle of Singapore. Thanks for the advice.

Hi there! If you have 3 days to kill at the place itself, you can definitely head off to the following places in Malaysia: - KL - Langkawi - Tioman Island - Redang island - Malacca You might want to do some research on these places beforehand. Cheers!

Melaka seems to be getting the vote here and possibly Johor Bahru. Thanks for the suggestions. Cheers, J

Would it be feasible to travel form Marang Jetty to the Cameron Highlands, stay the night there, then go south towards Malacca for a night then final night in Johor Bahru? To ambitious by bus? J

Too ambitious, I'd say! You are better off sticking to the East Coast on the way down to SG imho.. You can even explore Trengganu itself or Kuantan or Beserah on the way down. From Kuantan you can go on a trip to Lake Chini and get a taste of Orang Asli life and blowpipes! ;-) FYI Cherating Village would be fun. There's all kinds of budget chalet accommodation there, as well as "The Moon at Half Past Four" (I think it's still there!). As far as I'm aware the turtle sanctuary (the beach itself, not the turtle breeding station) is within the Club Med (it was Club Med which started the sanctuary), so I'm not sure if you can access it from the station.. If you are lucky you can persuade the Fisheries Dept guys to allow them to follow you into the Club Med beaches where they go to collect eggs for incubation at their station.. BTW you forgot to mention which time of year you'll be there as turtle season would be from May to Sept.

Living in Ireland where you can easily cross the country in a few hours I am a bit innocent re travel distances. We will be in Marang, having spent a few days on Paula Gemia on 31st July. It will be the East Coast so, working our way south for 3 days. I'm taking note of the places you recommend. thanks so much. J

It's not so much the distances in MY but the bus routes/schedules. It takes several hours to get to/from CH from KL, so to proceed to Melaka afterwards would be a long bus ride, indeed, esp in this heat.. I'm not sure if there is a direct bus via Raub, Pahang to CH.. Coming from Ireland, CH's coolness would not be such an attraction to you, except for the tea plantations and the British relic Tudor style 'Smoke House! I would say Lake Chini and a stop at an aboriginal village where you can practise how to 'blow' a blow-pipe, would be more interesting to you! I'm not sure if they go to Lake Chini via the tropical (mangrove?) tree-lined river tributary anymore, which was interesting! ;-)
