I am planning traveling from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City at the end of the month. Quick question: Is it a long arduous trip & is it expensive. Advice welcome. Cheers. J
it is around 10$ and some 8 hours depending on what kind of bus to take. Lots of firms offer you this service ...just look around in Siem Reap. ;-)

I thought that the buses from Siem Reap to HCMC went via Phnom Penh. There are direct buses once or twice a day and they take longer than 8 hours more like 12 hours and there is no change of buses at the border. fare ranges from 15 to 23 dollars. If someone has more recent information, please post. the bus i use is Mekong Express.

We did this recently - we went with Samco buses - it was a big, super comfortable bus. Apparently they remove a few seats to give extra leg room. Highly recommended, from memory it was12 but we booked through a guest house (adds a few bucks). We hit a monster traffic jam on the way from HCM to PP, near the river crossing. Our bus stopped for 5 hours, until we paid a bribe to the police ($55 for the bus), and were promptly directed out of the jam and past heaps of traffic. to the above poster: the 12 dollar fare was from HCMC to Phnom Penh? rather than all the way to Siem Reap? which is another six hours away by bus.

oops, my bad! indeed it was12 from Ho Chi Minh to Phnom Penh, not to Siem Reap. My brain is failing me. But if anyone is going just from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap by bus, you have to try Giant Ibis ($13). Its a luxury bus - flat screen tv with good movies, heaps of room, water and snacks onboard and even free wifi. I was so excited about wifi on a bus in se-asia i had to do a blog post from onboard: ashaandryan.com/2012/06/blog...

I flew into VN, took one of the tour with Saigon Tourist co. for 4days/3nites for less than200 (with 3 or 4 star accommodation). The other option is to use Mai-Linh express bus service from Saigon to Siemrep (just don't know the cost) if you want to DIY. The boat trip is slow but worth it if you have the time. Sorry my advice was not good at all -I was just thinking on the trip from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh. I forgot that I did stay a few nights in Phnom Penh. So I would dobble the amound of timer and money for my advice for going all the way to HCMC. Have a nice trip ;-)

I personally find that guides are not particularly helpful for our travel style (they rush us) and we will only use them... more
