Rental car companies - drop charge

      Canada Jul 26, 2015 at 7:06 AM

      Hi VTers,

Im planning a trip to Canada going from Montreal to Halifax with a rental car. Checking the classic rental car companies i see they apply a quite expensive one way drop charge. Are you aware of any rental car company who does not apply it and has a reasonable fare.

      Thanks all!

      Fairmont or Mountain work?

      Whistler Jul 15, 2015 at 6:44 PM

      Hi guys,

I am a total newbie to Whistler and will be coming for both this coming winter (arrive late October) and staying on to do a Summer.
Because I've never been there I don't know what jobs are considered better. I have been offered work in the guest services area of the Fairmont as well as working for the mountain in retail.
Just wondering if anyone had any ideas on whether Fairmont has a good reputation for being a good place to work, Ok pay etc? Just trying to weight it up against the pros of working for the mountain and getting a season pass etc.

      Any help is greatly appreciated!

    • Travelling from Gaspe to Bathurst in New Brunswick via Bus ?

      Gaspé Jul 6, 2015 at 1:29 PM

      Hi,
I am travelling to Gaspe airport (YGP) from Toronto (YYZ) via Air Canada. Once I reach Gaspe I intend to travel in a rental car to New Brunswick, PEI, Cape Breton. The whole trip is around 10 days long.
I checked with the rental car companies and the province of Quebec has per Km pricing and no kms are free.
Hence I need to move out of Quebec and then rent a car preferably in the province of New Brunswick (Bathurst or Moncton) for the entire trip.
Can some one please help me in this regard. How do i travel out of Gaspe via a Bus or any other means to Bathurst in New Brunswick ?
Moreover if someone knows of any rental agency in Gaspe, QC that charges just like in the province of Ontario pls do let me know ?

      Toronto around Easter next year

      Toronto Jul 19, 2015 at 6:56 AM

      Hi all,

I'm planning to visit Toronto at the end of March just around Easter. Found some information that most shops are only closed on 'Good Friday' and there is not really a second Easter day. Are the other days around Easter easy with a lot of shops open and does it get really crowded with tourists?

      Thanks in advance,

      Vincent

We will be arriving about 7.30am at the International Airport. Are taxis expensive from airport to downtown Vancouver. (Best Western 718 Drake Street) or are shuttle buses better. I know train would be cheapest but because of suitcases would have to probably walk several books with them? What is best

This is our preliminary plan and would be very grateful if I could get some input on this. I'll be renting a car (I'm British, hope it's not too hard):

19th - Wake up in Toronto - Day trip to Niagara falls, Night in Toronto
20th - Drive to Gananoque, Day trip to Thousand Islands, Drive to Montreal in evening
21st - Day in Montreal, Night in Montreal
22nd - Day in Montreal, Night in Montreal
23rd - Day in Montreal, Drive to Quebec City in evening, Night in QC
24th - Day in Quebec City, Night in Quebec City
25th - Day in Quebec City, Night in Quebec City
26th - Day in Quebec City, Night in Quebec City
27th - Drive to Toronto, arrive late afternoon - Night in Toronto
28th - Day in Toronto, Night in Toronto
29th - Day in Toronto, Night in Toronto
30th - Day in Toronto, Night in Toronto
31st - Day in Toronto, Night in Toronto

Thoughts? We haven't planned exactly what we're doing in those cities, but gone off recommendations for time we should spend in each city.

I'd appreciate any input or recommendations.

      Thanks!

      Transportation Around Niagara Falls, Ontario

      Niagara-on-the-Lake Jul 12, 2015 at 3:10 PM

      Mahalo Folks!

We will visit Niagara Falls (with two seniors), in a couple of weeks. While they are both in overall good health, one has a weakened knee and the other a less than youthful lower back. Please share about the walking involved at Niagara Falls, Ontario? Is transportation (taxis, shuttles) available and convenient? We have accommodations at the Marriott Falls View, and I was wondering about the walk to the Falls, boat tours, and casino.

      Many thanks!

I am planning to visit a welding school ( http://www.weldtechtraining.com/ ) on July 27 to inquire the details about the certifications they provide for students from the U.S in person and its whereabouts. I am planning to stay at Mississauga for a few days and hang out places nearby that is entertaining and has other recreations as well. I wish to stay in well furnished hotel (prefer to have budget rooms) that has Mexican restaurants nearby.

    • Use of English outside of the big cities

      Quebec Jul 10, 2015 at 4:07 AM

An American friend, who doesn't speak any French, who does a lot of travel withing Quebec as part of his job, told me that he used to run into hostility from merchants and the public in general in Quebec, outside of Montreal and Quebec City, when he'd ask questions in English. He said he learned a trick to solve the problem. When he enters a store, he starts off by saying, "Habla Espanol?" then "Sprechen sie Deutch?". While the locals typically don't speak Spanish or German, they assume that the person is not American and not an English speaking Canadian.
Then, with a fake accent, he says "Do you speak English?". Usually the merchant is then relieved, and delighted to speak English. Apparently anti-English resentment is not really against the English language, but against Americans and Canadians who take it for granted that everyone should speak English.
Has this worked for any of you?
