Can any member recommend a tour guide for our first day in Shanghai (think we will know better & quicker if guided on first day)
Do not want to use agency ---- perhaps there is someone doing such guides part time or are students
who can assist with basic tour to understand areas and subways in city area. Further it would be good to have a contact should we need to go to an area or need a translator. Tour / assistance will be for me and my girlfriend only.
Where is the best place in Shanghai area to go looking for factories.
While visiting the city I would like to look out for some type of goods which I could export and sell in UK.
is there a particular free zone or trade zone where the companies are gathered?
Has anyone send goods back to UK recently to know the duty charge and procedures?
Hi members, I am going to travel again and seek your knowledge and great advise
I am sorry to start with hotels as almost one in three posts are about hotels!
I am heading to Shanghai and wish to spend a week there (maybe go outside for a night or two) and wish hotel advise
my requirements are
1. must be clean & tidy. 2 reasonable value ($80 daily budget) 3. wifi access 4. near metro to tour the city
From reading the notes I think Jing An district, People's Square near metro would be a good central location and would get better value than closer to Bund,
We are visiting Shanghai for 1 week in first week of November and would like members help
Can you please advise good clean hotel for circa $80 dollar which is good base for traveling and walking around or perhaps an apartment hotel would work good
Also where we could go outside Shanghai for a trip and overnight stay to see life outside the city ..maybe by travelling 2-3 hours on fast train
How about weather by that time- will it require us to bring jackets?- we would like to have light pack bag as possible
And lastly, best restaurants to visit (not expensive just good value)
I would be reaching Pudong in the morning and need to reach People Square / Nanjin Rd from the airport.
Wanted to know if the bus #5 Airport Shuttle stops at People Square or goes further to Middle Yan An Rd ?
Could i request for a drop at People Square Metro ?
I'm spending 3 days in Shanghai over Thanksgiving break (visiting a friend who moved there for work) - I've never been to China before and don't know that much about Shanghai (the other two destinations on the trip, Tokyo & Hong Kong, I've been wanting to visit forever!) - what are must-dos and sees in Shanghai in a 72 hour window? I'll be staying in the Jing-An district, if that helps shape your answers!
Can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Hi ...we are booked to be in Shanghai for 7 days over Easter in 2014. Have never been before and looking for accommodation hopefully with exec lounge acces on Nanjing Road or close at a reasonable rate. Some say the French Concession area is the place to stay. Our budget is around $200 au per night and can go up a little. As first time visitors would love some hints on what to see over those 7 days, I know it seems like a long time but wanted a change from our normal rushing around and do things hopefully a bit more slowly. We love shopping too and would be interested in at least one market. I am busy studying all the forums but if there are any experts out there. Also I am allergic to MSG in foods, how do I say " No MSG" in the corect language. Thank you

I would like to view and take some pictures of Shanghai from an aerial viewpoint.
On the Pudong side of the Hangpu river which would be the besy building to choose, The Oriental Pearl TV tower, The Jinmao Tower or the Shanghai World Financial Tower - or is there a better alternative?.
Also, are there any tall buildings on the Bund side from where the Pudong side can be viewed from above.
Thanks for any advice.
We are a family of 4 flying from Heathrow to Sydney with a stopover in Shanghai. The stopover is for 2 nights. We would like to stay somewhere that is close to a metro station connected to the airport but close to the centre and tourist attractions....on a budget :0) Any suggestions please?

I am seeking for an accommodation for my son who will study in Shanghai Tongji University. He is 21 years old and non-smoker.

Anyone in Shanghai can help?
We are arriving Pudong airport early in the morning (flying our of Sydney) in a few weeks time and have 7.5 hours wait in Shanghai before our next flight to London. Our last stop over at Pudong airport 5 years was an extremely frustrating experience and I am hoping things have improved...
1. Do they now have international transfer (so that you do not have to go through immigration, pick up your luggage and check in again which is what we had to do the last time - it took us 3 hours and we almost missed our flight!). If so, what it the procedure now?
2. Are there ATMs inside the international transfer area? (If not, we will need to change money before we leave Sydney)
3. What are the facilities inside the international transfer area - specifically food/restaurants, places to relax etc.
We are landing and flying out of Terminal 1.
Hi, Where can I buy animation / action figure in Shanghai?
Are there any places like Akihabara or Nagano in Japan where there are a lot of shops?
Also, do we need to bargain? (In Japan, we do not bargain...)
Thank you very much for your advices.
I hold an Australian passport. Can I visit Shanghai for a day only? I have return flight within 24 hours of arriving. Do I still need to apply for a visa before flying?
We are joining a tour in May but as we are arriving two days early we took pot luck on one of the hotels that the tour group use and booked Shaanxi Business Hotel, Jing'an District. We have now heard that our tour is starting from the Ramada Zhabei and our third and fourth nights in Shanghai will be there. So we are deliberating whether to amend our initial booking so we don't have to change hotels (two nights in each).
The first day of our free time we aim to check out People's Square, The Bund and go under the river to Pudong. The second day we want to get a bus from People's Square to Zhujiajiao. Then we would come back and change hotels to join the tour.
The Shaanxi looks a more central location but as we will be travelling for 3 weeks, maybe we should just go to the Ramada for all 4 nights.......
Any advice from people who know Shanghai well??!! Thanks.
One day in Shanghai what should I see?
anyone in hangzhou now ?
I'm booked for a visit to Shanghai arriving 21 May. I'm flying Air Asia from Gold Coast, via KL.
I'm a bit nervous arriving at 23:45 and have requested my booked hotel (the Linhao) to provide their free shuttle service to pick me up.
Does anyone have experience of this situation? Are the hotel shuttle buses reliable?
Not having been to shanghai before, I don't want any hassles.
Thanks in advance...
Hello all. I am trying to organize a trip to Shanghai in practically zero time, as I will go next Saturday. I have few questions as I will be mostly walking around on my own there during daytime, my friend will be at work so I'll have to do the basic sightseeing on my own. So here i go with my bullet questions:
1. Safety: how safe is Shanghai for a western woman to walk around?
2. Transport: I dont speak Chinese, is the Metro comprehensive? I didnt have a problem with Tokyo metro, but I think here is a different story.
3. My friend uses cabs a lot. Are they safe? Arent they too expesnive?
4. 5 days for Shanghai, are they enough? What else would you suggest in the nearby area? Is Dunhuang (far away) a good choice for my second and final travel stop? Are there interesting alternatives around Shanghai?
thanks and I might be back with more questions
Hello VT people
we are travelling to shanghai at end of march and begining of april, what i would like to know is the weather. Will we need to bring warm clothes? also is it going to be humid? we are travelling with our 8 month old daughter too at the time. We have booked our accommodation at the grand central hotel. I believe its quite good and close to many shopping outlets etc..... from our hotel how far is it to pudong new international expo centre? is it better to catch a train or taxi there?
from the airport how shall we go to the hotel, taxi or train??? im thinking taxi as we have a baby with us and there will be a lot to carry.
apart from shopping what else can we do there?
can anyone suggest really good shopping places near where we are staying?
how do we book ticket fares for trains. is it best to do it here (adelaide) or in shanghai? do we need to pre book?
is there anything that we should respect in china, eg clothing, photos etc... we dont want to offend china's culture.
