I have found websites giving me prices and destinations from Shanghai but was thinking its an opportunity to stop somewhere different on the way to Guangzhou, but where? Can anyone recommend somewhere interesting that the train may stop at (assuming I can stay a day or two and get a ticket to continue my journey) Going in October so plenty of time to explore options
What part of October? During the first week trains will be very busy due to National day holiday week. I am not sure of the route it takes but I think you would have to buy a ticket from Shanghai to wherever you want to stop and then buy another ticket to Guangzhou.

It will be from the 7th October after the holidays Thanks

The holiday is taken as week by a lot of people so as long as you travel on the 8th or later you should be OK.

You probably won't be able to. The Chinese don't always work that way. maybe through a travel agent you be successful but I doubt you will be able to book train travel online as this is only just become available to Chinese and it has not been an unqualified success.

I found this en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wuha... High-Speed_Railway but it does not explain whether the seats are seats or sleepers. I prefer to travel over night. any ideas ?
