Purchasing Train Tix

by Hopkid Online Now May 6, 2005 at 12:24 PM

We're going to Andalucia in June (3-15). At some point we'll be taking the train from Sevilla to Granada to spend 3 days there and then back. We'll also be taking a day trip to Cordoba (perhaps on the AVE) from Sevilla. During this time of year is it advisable to purchase tix in advance through Renfe or are we safe just getting them at the train station? I'm asking before I put in all my identifying info to get a Renfe user account.

Hi ! I took the train from Granada to Sevilla in February. It's a two coach train that runs 4 times a day (but check the timetable !) and is comfortable. I have used the bus also on this route as it takes about the same time. On balance I think I prefer the train because of the better scenery and the comfort factor. When I took the bus, I did actually book and pay for the ticket the day before (outside Spain) to make sure that I had a seat. I used www.movelia.es to choose the seat and pay for it. I took the printed reservation and exchanged it for my ticket at the bus ticket office. As it happened, I did not need to buy a ticket in advance because the bus was half full or is that half empty ? With the train, if you have time, you should get a ticket in advance, say the day before,at least, to make sure of your seat. Visit the station and buy your ticket in advance. The station at Sevilla (Santa Justa) is within walking distance of the centre. I reckon it's about 30 minutes approx. from the cathedral, but you could get lost without a map ! The bus station (for Granada) is closer being just across the main road from the rear of the Alcazar gardens. Say 12 minutes fom the cathedral. If you know the way ! However, as with all these trips using public transport, if you want to travel on major feast days etc beware that the world and his wife may want to as well ! This is particularly the case during Easter time between Madrid and Sevilla. The chances of getting a seat on an AVE during this time is extremely limited indeed unless you book in advance. If your schedule is very tight and you dare not miss a paricular train/bus then it's always best to buy the ticket in advance to be safe. The train is also only two cars so this would limit the number of seats and it's a long way to stand.
