Traveling fFROM Florence

by Levante Online Now Nov 7, 2012 at 9:45 AM

I am arriving in Florence, Italy, by air. How can I find transportation to Sestri Levante, and what would be the cost? Will be traveling alone, so need fairly simple directions. Do not speak Italian ,only English.

Do not worry about not speaking Italian. Florence is *very* well-used to hun dreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world arriving every year.

Take transport (bus or taxi) into Florence itself from the airport. Info in English on the official website:

    aeroporto.firenze.it/en/pass...

Buses stop at 'Piazza Stazione', which is next to Santa Maria Novella railway station.

Once you are at SMN railway station buy a ticket for Sestri Levante. Ticket machines all have English language options and are very easy to use. They accept cash and give change, and will also accept cards with chip & PIN.

You can find train times, details and fares in English here:

    trenitalia.com/homepage_en.h...

There is a huge electronic departures board in the entrance foyer of SMN station, and each platform (clearly numbered) has its own electronic sign (see below for more info).

You will have to make at least one change of train, possible two. Do not worry about this...timetables are set up to allow you enough time to make changes. Platforms have electronic signage both at their entrance (usually stepped_) and on the platform itself which indicates not only the final destination of the train but also its intermediate stops. But you can, if you wish, just make a note of the train number from the Trenitalia website: that will be displayed as well.

The one thing you must do is to make sure you validate (date-stamp) your ticket using the ywllow (possibly green and white...the new type of machine) *before* you board the train. You only need to do this once, at Florence. There are on-the-spot fines for non-validation and inspectors do check.

Journey time varies according to departure, from just under 3 hours. One-way fare also varies according to departure, from 15 euro.

The old-style validation machines are *yellow* (not 'ywellow'!) and are very obviously placed at the entrance to each platform, and on the platforms themselves. If SMN has any new green-and-white machines they will be equally obvious.

You can see a photo of the new-style machines in my tip here (Orvieto, but the machines are the same):
