We are staying at Dorst Campground for 1 week with a group of friends and family the end of June this year. From what we've read, all food needs to be stored in the bear containers provided by the park. However I'm now wondering if we'll have enough room in the containers to fit our dry food and coolers. Does anyone know the size of the bear containers for the campsites? It also sounded like there are a few group bear containers, and I am wondering about the size of them as well. Also any tips or information you can give us about camping there relating to food, would be great. We've done a lot of camping, both backpack and car, but now with kids we do mostly car camping around Las Vegas area, so food issues aren't revelant. I just want to make sure we have enough food for us for the week, and have adequate storage for our refridgeable items. On our campsite we'll have possibly 6 adults and 2 kids. Thanks!
I finally found this URL after doing a search for sequoia bear-resistent www.usparkinfo.com/kings.html If you scroll down you'll see the size of the bear-resistent box at every campground. Dorst is listed as "size varies," but you can get an idea. I should mention that the Rangers are VERY picky about the "Be Bear Aware" Rules, as they have resulted in bear problems being cut in half. Ranger Smith (amongst others) can't seem to educate the bears not to eat picnic baskets, so they've decided to instead educate the (supposedly) smarter species. Try to smarter than the average person!

the bear boxes at Dorst should be enough per campground for 8 people on a group site. If you are experienced campers and you said you even backpacked, then you should know the appropriate amount of food to bring for the group and that amount for a week on the 3 bear boxes for a group site is no problem. The size is taller but not much wider than a regular rectangle cooler. You can also pack food in a cooler, cover it up with blankets since the bears know what the sight of a cooler means, and leave it locked in the car. It's a risk and if there has been disturbance recently, the rangers won't like that. There is a small supermarket in the middle of the Park with showers, washing machine and other touristy things that you can buy more food but since your only going for a week,....
