My husband and I are visiting Seattle for the first time and were wondering what the weather is usually like at the end of October, early November.

Well, rain may be in your forecast or at least mist.

It is extremely difficult to predict the weather in this part of the country. You can get about anything at any time. Rain? Yes, it will rain during your time here. However, there could very easily be some spectacular sun breaks during the day, even if the day starts out dark enough that you think you will never see the sun again. The problem is that the Olympic Mountains to the west of the city rise to 7,000 feet or so. What makes it over the mountains hits the city, and what doesn't make it over the mountains causes sun breaks in Seattle. This can really throw all sorts of weather predictions out the window. The typical rain is not very hard. It is usually more of a very fine mist or fog, and thus isn't that difficult to tolerate. However, heavy rain does happen sometimes. Usually, it doesn't last very long at all. There is usually a very cold wind that blows into the city off of Puget Sound. So, you will want some reasonably warm clothes, especially if you go out on the ferries (which have some of the best views in the region, especially if the weather is somewhat clear). However, the climate is quite mild compared to other places that are that far north. It rarely snows, even in December or January. If you go into the mountain passes you will likely hit some snow, and there may be areas in the mountains where tire chains are required. The city itself will be cool but not as cold as the mountains.

The best way to deal with the cold (wet) wind that Glenn explained is a warm sweater with a nylon windbreaker. Light gloves are also a good idea. 50° in Seattle with a wind of the water can feel like 35° and go right through a down parka

Do you own a good umbrella? I lived there three years, and you have to carry one with you a lot.

Layers are always advantageous, especially with waterproof outermost layer.

Sure it can be wet here, but if you are from the Northeast, it's not bad. Usually warmer here than many northern cities. The people who complain the most are usually from California. I'm from Michigan and this is heaven in the Winter.
