Hi all,
Just wondering how safe it is to take the trains around Scotland.
Are there any precautions I would need to be aware of...?

The last trains out of the city centres might be a bit rowdy at weekends. I'd avoid the areas of big soccer matches. That's all, really.

Scotland is great by train. I agree that things can be a bit "exciting" after a football match in the large cities.

Trains are very safe indeed...same as in the rest of the UK. As mentioned, trains carrying lots of football supporters can be rowdy, noisy and crowded but they are not actively unsafe, just best avoided for your own journey comfort.
Chances are you wouldn't be using any of those anyway, so nothing to worry about.

The answers above are spot on. I'd just add that there are some absolutely stunning rail journeys in Scotland, it is a great way to travel.

All trains have CCTV that record images all the time that are flashed back to a control centre. Even late night trains in the Glasgow area are safe - they may be rowdy but not dangerous.

Which routes are you planning to do?
As stated above there are some stunning routes.
I particularly enjoyed the journey from Glasgow to Oban a few years ago, passing by Loch Awe late afternoon, which has left an impression on me.
Back, when I was in my late 20's - quite a while ago ;-) I enjoyed an unlimited rail pass to use around Scotland (not sure if this is still available) but had a wonderful time using it to its full advantage - made a trip across the Forth Rail Bridge - both ways, took a few trips down a line - just for the hell of it and enjoyed a couple of the classic trips. All were trouble free!

Francesca , the trains are very safe in Scotland and as mentioned are equipped with cctv. Main football teams that attract large crowds are in Edinburgh and Glasgow where fans may be singing and chanting but the days of hooliganism are more or less gone. I traveled to a football match in January in London and the passengers were very quiet.
I would be concerned late at night on the Glasgow Subway where you may encounter rowdy groups who have had a night out drinking.

You can still buy a Scot rail pass severe you get unlimited travel for a reasonable cost. Have a look at the Scot rail website.

There was almost an incident on the train home tonight. I was trying to read my Montalbano book and had to contend with three people talking on their phones at the same time. Fortunately I passed this test.
These trains can be trying! :-)
