We have relatives from India arriving end August, staying for a short time with us. (they love awesome sceneries and views of the Alps in particular but could not get a swiss visa unfortunately , only EU). We live in Mannheim and are planning to visit Salzburg for 3 nights end of August and 3 nights in Vienna. Our plan currently is Day 1: Arrive in Munich by train - spend an hour on a bus tour so my relatives get to see a bit of Marienplatz and Konigplatz - on to Chiemsee - and sleep the night in Salzburg. Day 2: Use the Bayern ticket (which we will buy in advance) and visit Konigsee and Eagles Nest at Berchtesgaden. Spend the rest of the day at Salzburg. Day 3: Visit either Garmisch Paten Kirchen OR Achensee by train and spend the day there. Day 4: Take the bus ride to Wolfgangsee (Mt Schafberg) and Hallstatt from Salzburg. Day 5: Take the evening train to Vienna and stay there until Day 8 morning when we have a return flight to Frankfurt (near Mannheim) I am unsure about the following: a) Can we use the Einfach Raus ticket on the cog train in Mt Schafberg...? b) If I were to decide between Garmisch and Achensee which one should I? c) Can the Eagles Nest be dropped from the itenary.. d) Are there other places (Werfen, GrossGlockner, etc) that we should not miss out, which are accessible from Salzburg..and would be recommended in place of the existing itenary Thanks a ton... and I find this site very helpful ! thanks to all the members.
I'll have to get back with you on your itenerary, as I have to go out soon. A couple of quick observations though. Your day 1 and day 2 plans seem pretty rushed. Garmisch would be much easier to visit from Munich, there are almost hourly trains. I would seriously consider an overnight there. King Ludwig II's Linderhof, the Ettal Monastery, and the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak are located there. You can travel up the Zugspitze, but it is a bit time consuming. Gary

You might look at the web sites for the Vienna Card, and the Salzburg Card. Both offer free local transport and attraction discounts which can add up. A web site that might offer additional "things to do" information for Salzburg and Vienna: www.whatsonwhen.com. You might consider looking at the German Rail web site: www.bahn.de for information on the Bayern Ticket (Laender Ticket). It could possibly save you some money as well. I believe the price is 27 Euro for up to 5 people. You can't use the "fast trains", and travel is in 2nd class. You could purchase the tickets to Munich, then use the seperate Bavaria Tickets from Munich to Garmisch, from Garmisch, through Chiemsee, and on to Salzburg, and from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, and return. Salzburg is considered as a part of both the German and Austrian Rail systems. Gary

Hi Gary.... Thanks for the feedback...Our original plans were to stay over for a night at a Munich apartment to be able to got to Garmisch more easily... but because of the hoilday season and the late planning, it was impossible to find a good one....I had therefore booked the 3 nights in Salzburg and hence am constrained by that. I now have the following smaller itenary: Day 1 - Short tour of Munich and rest at Salzburg (my relatives are more for great scenery around Salzburg and prefer to limit the Salzburg city trip to a slow walk around the Altstadt) Day 2 - Berchtesgaden (Konigsee and Eagles Nest) (Having gone to Berchtesgaden I thought we may as well have a look at Eagles Nest, for the views from top, which I hope are good) Day 3 - Achensee Day 4 - Take the bus past Wolfgangsee to Hallstatt and late eveing train out of Salzburg I hope this works !! PS: I had posted this question on 2 parallel forums by mistake (Schafberg and Salzburg)....
