Please tell me if the drive from Sault St Marie to Thunder Bay around October 17 would be nice. What in particular is nice to see? I would appreciate all suggestions. Thank you. Joe Whitehouse
Are you doing this drive in one day or more?? Weather is always hit and miss in the Fall around Lake Superior..I hope you're interested in "natural" settings because this is what youre going to find on this drive.Its mostly forest and highway and small communities. Early in the mornings and evenings and night time...if you're on the roads during these times be cautious of moose on the highway.. Ive only spent short periods of time up there..but Ive made time to stop around Wawa to check out the Agawa Pictographs.. Fall colors in Michigan will probably be well past their peak by that time - last weekend, I took my annual fall color drive up to the Keewenaw Peninsula, and I'd say that they were at their peak then. You will probably still be able to see some very nice colors, but mostly closer to the lakeshore, and not so much in the inland, "higher elevation" areas. I live in Marquette - I think this is a nice town to stop in. The drive up to Big Bay is pleasant - there is an isolated lighthouse there worth seeing. You might also enjoy Munising, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in very attractive. Further west, Ashland WI is a progressive college town with a good cafe, the Black Cat. Just outside Ashland on US 2 is the Great Lakes Visitors Center, well-worth a stop. Taking a short detour up to Bayfield WI is also recommended - a small town with a New England feel, and great restaurants. I like Duluth, but you might bypass it to focus on the "north shore drive" on US 2 heading up to Canada. It's worth taking time for, with many waterfalls and dramatic lookouts over Lake Superior.
