Good places to stay with children in Sardinia?

by sarahofoxford Online Now Jun 16, 2012 at 11:15 AM

Thinking of going to Sardinia with our chidren aged 7 and 4. What is weather like in August, would it be unbearable hot? Don't know anything about the island at all - so any suggestions of good areas to be based in, or recommendations of places to stay would be welcome. We would probably want somewhere self catering and not too far from the coast, but not keen on the idea of an apartment in a complex or being in a big resort. Thanks

We only really know Alghero well but it is on the coast and in August has a funfair and options to ride a horse drawn carriage as well as a little train like vehicle on wheels that tours the old town. We've been 3 times and August every time, we see many families Walkways good, inbcluding through the otherwise part cobbled centro storico, for a buggy if required Weather will be up to 30C+ and more on hottest days, do expect a shower on 1 or 2 days if you are there for 2 weeks. You can get historical average temperatures for your dates at wunderground.com/q/zmw:00000... Mainly hotels, but still a plethora of apartments available and none of them that big a resort in Alghero

It has been ages that I was on Sardegna, but with your kids aged 4 and 7 I would suggest Villasimius region. This is in the very southeast of the island. Crystal clear water and very shallow water. Have a look at the aerial photo in Wikipedia: it.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:V... When I was there, we were camping, so am afraid I can't helpwith accommodation. But since Villasimius is quite popular, it should be not that much of a problem to find a place for you. The problem would more be if there is anything still available right now. August is prime holiday month for Italians and many accommodations might be already booked. Weatherwise I would assume that it will be hot, very hot. We were there in June and melted in times. Hope that helps for more ideas as of where to stay. Ingrid

Hi sarahofoxford. Sardinia in August is pretty much packed with tourists as it is when the Italians take vacation, at least the first 2 weeks anyway. Temperatures will be between 35 and 40 with a few degrees fluctuation on some days. I live in the north in Costa Smeralda and can tell you it is very beautiful and is child friendly. You can still find plenty of villas, houses, and apartments available but you'll need to get started soon because they will go fast. I work for an agency out of Baia Sardinia and we get requests for August starting in November. Above all rent a car. That is important no matter what part of the island you go to. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.
