Public transportation in Sarasota

by e_lena Online Now Apr 5, 2006 at 7:12 PM

I am going to Sarasota for a week with my child in May. I cannot decide if I should rent a car or use public transportation. We are staying at Hyatt Hotel (1000 Bulv. of the Arts). Are there direct bus lines going to beaches (Siesta, Lido, Fort Myers)? I am also thinking about taking my child to Marie Salby Botanical Gardens, aquarium, Myakka State Park and some other attractions. I am worried that if I rent a car I will have problems to find parking. Also I don't want to go to notorious 41 highway :(

Heh - when I read your subject line, "Public transportation in Sarasota," I literally laughed. There is virtually no such thing. There is something called the SCAT and MCAT lines, which is the public bussing. It runs a little more than business hours every day - to scattered locations throughout the county. Taxis in Sarasota are EXPENSIVE, with Diplomat probably being your best bet. Personally, though, I'd just rent a car (try to get a voucher with insurance via your travel agent, you'll save a lot of money that way). US 41 is tricky, but if you practice defensive driving and know your route, you should be fine.

Do not count on public transportation!! Marie Selby is a wonderful place to visit and I have never had a problem parking there. Myakka Park also has adequate parking and is an interesting site. Ringling circus museum would be good for a child, and the art museum and Ringling house for you. We usually went to Lido beach, but our son prefered Siesta, a little further. By all means rent a car. Driving is not that difficult especially in May. Go by the Tourist info and they can give you other suggestions for interesting sights for a child. Sarasota is a fun place. We had a house there for many years and kept finding new things to do. Be sure to eat at one of the Amish restaurants -- excellent. Have a great trip!
