Mother and Son

by deanna23 Online Now Mar 24, 2011 at 8:44 AM

My husband will be in Sao Paulo, and is staying at the Marriott Executive Apartments. I was thinking about joining him for a few weeks. Is it safe to assume that myself and a 14 year old will be able to move around the city, and via the metro in a safe manner? Or will I be band to my hotel room???

You'll be fine safety wise. It's not Sodom and Gomorrah, actually, with kidnappings left and right every minute. Use common/street sense, as in any big city, while you explore the neighborhoods. Leave ANY valuables at home, or at least in the hotel. Don't walk in deserted places. Take taxis at night. For "a few weeks", though, I would be bored out of my mind in S.P. It's a huge, polluted, mainly business city, with some museums (not the quality I had expected from a city that size, though, but interesting), restaurants, clubs, and expensive shops. Walk around the neighborhoods (Jardins, Vila Mariana, Liberdade, etc). Eat lots of tropical flavored gelato. Go to the malls. Take a day trip to Embu craft village. Take day trips to the beach (not close, and avoid weekends because of traffic jams). Or rent a beach house in Guaruja or somewhere kind of close and have your husband join you on the weekends.

I stayed at the Marriott Executive Apartments, very nice, but be aware that the Metro, underground, does not service that area. There are plenty of buses that go from your hotel area to other parts of the city or to a Metro stop so you can use the underground. The closest bus stops are about a 10 minute walk away from the hotel.

it's better to avoid high traffic times aka 7:00-9:00AM and between 5-7:30 PM. The buses are pretty confusing and the metro doesn't go everywhere, but I'm sure you can find some interesting things to see on near the metro stops. If you are staying for I few weeks I suggest you get a Bilhete unico (pass that works on train, metro and bus) This will save you a lot of money as it only charges you once in a certain number of hours. Please check out my blog, it might give you some insight into life in Sao Paulo. www.gringasguidesp.blogspot.com

The principal obstacle to your moving around the city will not be security, but the traffic! Yes, of course you must go, but try to arrange w/e trips out, eg to Rio and Paraty.
