How to see the island of Sao Jorge in the Azores

      Ilha de São Jorge Yesterday

I will be flying from Terceira to Sao Jorge and spending two days there (in December.) What is the best way to see the island, especially off the beaten path? (Renting a car is not an option.) I'm also interested in getting a flavor of the way of life through the people, but I don't speak Portuguese. Can one hire a taxi with an English speaking driver for a reasonable amount? Are there some hidden gems that shouldn't be missed? Oh, and is there anywhere that I could see women quilting? I hear this island is known for their colorful quilts.

Recommendations for a hotel or in on Sao Jorge island in The Azores?

      Ilha de São Jorge Yesterday

Can anybody recommend a place to stay on Sao Jorge that is not modern? I want to experience the flavor of the island. A place that isn't too far from a town and with good views and perhaps a restaurant would be good. (I'm headed to The Azores for a week stay in December.)

    • Tavira v Ferragudo v Albufeira

      Tavira Sep 10, 2015 at 1:40 AM

we stayed in Ferragudo August 2015 and found it charming with some very good quality restaurants

but found it a little too quiet for our 3 teenage children

Albufeira the year before but found that too touristy and loud in places
Hoping that tavira is somewhere in the miiddle
      Any opinions really appreciated

    • connections between Boston to Lisbon( beginning of May 2016)

      Lisbon Sep 29, 2015 at 5:26 PM

American flies thru Philadelphia. United flies thru Newark
I have always flown through international airports, and never connected in the states.
      1. Which airport is easier to navigate?
      2. Does my luggage check through, or do I need to retrieve it after the 1st flight and then check it to the 2nd leg?
      3. Is 2 hours enough to connect thru both these airports? or should I aim for 3 hours to be safe?
      4. Any pros/cons to either airport/airlines re: being on time. or whatever.

Lisbon 5 to 6 days what are the must sees in and around?

      Lisbon Sep 30, 2015 at 1:07 PM

We will be arriving mid morning Lisbon mid November and will have 5 1/2 days further to explore.
Please provide a guide to pack the most in our short stay.

      1) What are must sees in the city itself?
      2) What destinations outside the city are must visits and how long do we require in each?
      3) Do you recommend staying the night at any of these outlying areas?
      4) Any other tips you can offer

      Thank You

    • How do you get to SMP from Porto by train/taxi/bus? How long does it take? Is it easy to do?

by jonallen10 Online Now Mar 10, 2014 at 2:55 AM

We are staying in Porto for a few days then looking for a nice beach area to stay for 9 days after.

With my wife and 3 year old.

Happy to get the train or similar if doesn't take all day.

Is it is easy to do from Porto? Or if very hard where else could anyone suggest?

      Thanks for your help,

    • Sea fog in July?

by HollysGrandma Online Now Sep 25, 2011 at 2:36 AM

We visited SMP for the first time in the last 2 weeks in August 2010 - grandparents, parents, and grandchildren. We all fell in love with SMP and are planning a return visit in 2012. But I have to say that our first week in 2010 was marred a little bit by the morning sea fog; it burned off by noon but it did mean that the water in the pool was a bit cool!

So, my question is, does the sea fog occur every year? Is it only in August? Would we be better to come end/July or the beginning of August (we're tied to school holidays). Any advice gratefully received!

    • Swine flu/vaccine

by shoeman43 Online Now Aug 26, 2009 at 10:09 AM

Hi, my husband and I are coming to Sao Martinho on 7th October for 6 months initially. The swine flu vaccination will be available in the U.K some time in October. As a diabetic I would be one of the first to receive the vaccination. Can anyone tell me as a matter of urgency a) the current situation with regard to swine flu incidence b) when the vaccination is likely to be available in Portugal and c) whether vulnerable groups will be offered the vaccination first as in the UK.
Also, can someone find out how long it would take to get the temp residenc permit if we apply straight away, as we may need this to get the vaccination?

Your help will be very much appreciated!
