    • Any ideas for a special evening in Santiago de Chile?

by Lampenladen Online Now Dec 23, 2012 at 4:49 AM

Hi, my friend and I are backpacking in Chile in January and she will have her Birthday in Santiago. I would like to surprise her with something special for that evening. Does anyone have any ideas for that? Like: a rooftop bar, a place with lovely live music, special place to go to... We're backpackers, so it shouldn't be the Ritz :) I really hope you can help me, thanks in advance!! Best, Lampenladen

      Questions Santiago

by mdenton Online Now Dec 11, 2012 at 10:38 AM

Hello all. A few questions. I'm planning a two week trip to Santiago in spring of 2013. Will local banks exchange US dollars for pesos at a fair rate? If not, what would be your suggestions? I will also bring credit cards, but prefer to pay Efectivo. The guide books tell me that some hotels will not charge the 19% tax when paying in US dollars. Is this generally true? Are US dollars widely accepted? I'm renting a car and will be driving to the coast and to see Valparaiso/Vina del Mar area in addition to Santiago. How would you rate driving/parking difficulty in these cities? My scale would rate Chicago - easy, Madrid - difficult, Mexico City - very difficult, Rome - almost impossible. Thanks a lot for any advice you might provide. I have heard great things about Chile and want to see it for myself.

Guys; I would love an idea of what I can do in Santiago in a day. Actually I have a night available (Monday afternoon and night) then Thursday all day and Friday until 4pm. An itinerary would be great as it will be my first day in the city. I am going for a work conference and playing with the free time to see around the city. I will be staying about 4 blocks from "Palacio de la Moneda" on huerfanos street. Your suggestions will be very welcomed!!!!

    • Best area for a student to rent an apartment

by jschmidt16 Online Now Dec 18, 2011 at 9:19 AM

Hey everybody! First off, thank you all so much for the great input you all offered regarding my question about living in Plaza de Armas. It was such a help! For now, I'm kind of moving away from the idea of living there because of a lack of night life in the area. Like I told you guys in my last post, I am a 21 year old male who will be studying in Santiago next semester- I will be living with a family (per university policy) but I am looking for an apartment where I can stay on the weekends and host parties (if I make any Chilean friends :P ) For that reason, I'm wondering- is there an area that is well regarded with a decent "night life?" What STEREOTYPES and / or STIGMAS are associated with the different areas? I was looking at Providencia, Bellas Artes and Barrio Lastarria- I know the latter two are more "hip" and "bohemian" but would people look down at somebody for living there? From what I've read, it seems like Providencia is an alright area. I've looked at apartments in Las Condes because that's where my job is located, but it seems as though it would be boring at night and on the weekends- I want to be able to leave my apartment and find things to do. More than anything, I want to fully experience everything that Santiago has to offer. Sorry for the crazy train of though, but again, thank you all so much for your help!

    • Safety- Plaza de Armas (Santiago)

by jschmidt16 Online Now Dec 16, 2011 at 2:10 PM

Hi everybody, I am a 21 year old male university student that is planning on studying abroad next semester in Santiago. Because of university policies, I have to stay with a Chilean family while in Santiago, but in order to maintain some sense of independence / privacy, I'd really like to get an apartment for myself where I could stay on the weekends/ host parties/ etc. That said, I found an amazing loft apartment right in Plaza de Armas that has a great view of the Cathedral. Its really old and has a kind of Bohemian elegance... While I'm in love with the apartment, I was told by a Chilean friend (and have seen this online, as well) that Plaza de Armas is dangerous at night and that I should avoid renting the aforementioned apartment. What is the extent of the "danger" around the Plaza? I'm a native Spanish speaker and would probably only be there on the weekends. By "dangerous" do people mean that I'd likely be jumped whenever leaving? Is it close to any sort of night life? I'm in love with the apartment and so I'd really like to get an idea of how good of an idea it is to go ahead and reserve it for next semester. Thanks in advance for your help! Best Regards, J

Looking for a convenient hotel in Santiago, Chile

by frances1916 Online Now Nov 19, 2011 at 1:50 PM

We will be travelling on a cruise from Valparaiso, Chile around South America, Cape Horn, Falkland Islands, etc. etc. ending up in Rio de Janiro. We plan to spend one night in Santiago, Chile upon our arrival. Wondering if anyone has done this - and would appreciate suggestions as to where to stay overnight in Santiago. We plan to take a cab from the airport to the hotel, then hire a driver for a tour in and around Santiago. So we will be spending one night- one dinner and morning breakfast in Santiago. Will take a cab (or any other suggestion?) to Valpraiso at noon the next day. Would appreciate any help/comments. Many thanks!

I am a US citizen traveling to Santiago for a month in december. With the recent start of college classes again I was wanting to travel to Buenos Aires for a week while Im there. My research has shown flying is a little more expensive then a bus, but it takes a few hours instead of almost a day. SO i plan to fly. My questions are: 1) Will I be charged the 131 dollar entry fee in Argentina, even though I already paid a similar fee in Chile? 2) How are the Hostels in Argentina? Will i be able to find one, How much is it gonna cost me? 3) I am open to suggestions for other locations to travel to, Do yall have any suggestions??

by Anjulis Online Now Jul 8, 2011 at 9:30 AM

Hello, My 16 y.o. daughter will be in Santiago tomorrow for one day. Arriving to the airport around noon, leaving around 8pm. She would like to see Santiago's sights. Can you recommend the best way to see the town? Where to go, what is the best way to get from/to airport? I understand, there are some hop-on/hop-off buses. Where can she buy ticket for it and how to get there from the airport? How much it might be to hire a taxi at the airport for the whole day to drive her around, showing sights? She speaks some Spanish. Also, if some local young person would like to meet with her and show her the sites, that would be great. Thank you.
