I'm going to be in Santiago with some friends in January, and I can't decide where to stay. Barrio Bellavista seems like the right location for all the nightlife, but the hostel on the Plaza de Armas has such an amazing view and is right by all the museums and such. It seems like a really unique hostel, being right on the plaza like that. What would you recommend? Also, how long does it take to walk from the Plaza de Armas to Barrio Bellavista, and it is a safe walk at night? Are there taxis? Would it make sense to stay at the PdA and go to Bellavista at night?
Bellavista is about a 15-20 mins walk from Plaza de Armas. I'm not sure about the safety. I was with a group and we were not specifically told it was unsafe but then we did not see anything bad either. We were warned about pickpockets around Plaza de Armas but thats like every city/tourist area these days.

I´ve just left Santiago, going to the North I would advise you to choose bellavista, it is just a nice neighborhood, with great restaurants and bars in the evening I would say it is about a half an hour on foot towards the Plaza de Armas , and 5 minutes by metro

I agree - Bellavista is the pleasanter area in which to stay.

Hi there, I live in Santiago so haven't stayed in either place however personally I would rather stay in the Bellavista area than downtown if I had to choose between the two. You shouldn't walk between the two at night. Daytime is ok. The downtown plaza de armas area isn't that safe during the day and even worse at night so definitely think that Bellavista would be the better option of the two. There are taxis all over Santiago and generally safe. You shouldn't hand over a 10,000 bill for a fare though as I know of people who have been swindled by the driver into thinking they handed over only a 1,000 note. Check out my Santiago page for more info on Santiago. Cheers, Rhianon
