What sort of traffic conditions can we expect, and what time should we leave, given that the distance is about 180 kilometers and the "official" driving time is 2 hr 10 min?

      Spain road trip help

      Spain May 21, 2013 at 7:33 AM

My Girlfriend and I are about to do a car trip to Spain and the beginning of July. I got a flight gift so we have 2 options: start and finish in Madrid or flying to Madrid and coming back from Bilbao.

We looking for about 10 days trip, 2-3 of them in Madrid. I want to visit some pueblos, maybe driving some beautiful roads and basically enjoy the culture.

So, for the first option (Madrid-Madrid) I'm thinking: Madrid-Segovia-Avila-Salamanca-Valladolid-Burgos-Soria-Teruel-Madrid.

      For the 2nd option (Madrid-Bilbao) I'm thinking: Madrid-Segovia-Avila-Salamanca-Leon-Picos de Europa-Santander-Pamplona-San Sebastian

What do you think? Which one is better? For the 2nd option this is to much for 10 days? for the 1st option its not enough for 10 days? Any other places you can recommend for the road?

Also, we prefer not to know exactly where we will be every night so is it a must to book hotels in advance or I will be able to find nice rooms one day in advance?

    • A couple of days in Val de Nuria - any tips?

      Spain Apr 24, 2013 at 7:31 AM

      Hi guys,

We'll be arriving to Val de Nuria from Barcelona on a Sunday (we land in Barcelona at 9:30AM). We plan to take the train to Ribes de Freser and from there the Cremallera train to Nuria. I assume we'll get to Nuria around noon, and then we thought about doing the short hike from Nuria to Queralbs along the river gorge.

The following day is a full day for us, so we want to do a longer hike, possibly the GR11.7 - any tips on this route? do you recommend another 1-day hike?

      My questions are:

      1. Are there any good places to stay in Queralbs, or should we try to stay in Nuria?
      2. What are the best 1-day hikes around Queralbs/Nuria?
      3. Is there a place in Barcelona where we can store our baggage, before arriving to Val de Nuria?

      Thanks!

    • Santander to Somo - practical? Taxi cost?

by jjaay Online Now Sep 8, 2012 at 6:55 AM

I was thinking of going to Somo for some surf lessons. Though I head Somo is very quiet at night - so it makes sense to go to Santander for the nights. I assume the city would be nice. Just wondering. a) I think the last ferry is not too late (like 9pm) - so how much would a taxi be from Santander to Somo in the nights? b) Would it be better to stay in Somo - or in Santander and just commute to Somo in the morning for the surf lessons? Any advice appreciated

Hi all, I am going to be in the Santander/Bilbao area from July 2-5. I am going to be alone, and I'd like a family to host me for that time. I would rather get a rich cultural experience with a local family than stay at a hostel. Can anyone recommend a family or a site (I've tried a few and didn't get many Santander matches or they were too pricey). I'm from Florida, USA, 25 years old, female, don't smoke, and wouldn't need any fancy cleaning/driving services, just a nice family to host me for a few nights and give me some advice about travel in the area and maybe become my friends! I speak descent Spanish but an English-speaking family would be a plus.

    • Santander Where to stay??

Hi everyone I am going to Santander at the end of March and I'm now searching for a place to stay for 2 nights. There are many hotels and hostels available and as this is my first time to Santander, I don't know at which area should be the suitable place for me to stay. I would like to stay in an area where is comfortable to find local foods to eat, shops for shopping, food and fruit markets, and near public transportations. And if possible near the beach (but not mandatory). Could you please recommend me which areas of Santander or which beaches are the suitable place for me to stay? Are there buses from the Ryanair airport to that area? Could you also point out on the map where is the city centre of Santander? Thank you very much in advance for all the suggestions :)

Bus station confusion ... which bus station???

by nomad7890 Online Now Jul 28, 2009 at 4:30 PM

I have been looking at ways to get from Santander to San Vicente de la Barquera. I found La Cantabrica, and this station is supposed to be at c/Cádiz & Méndez Núñes., across the Renfe Station - center of town near the Cathedral. I only have weekday schedules for this company. There's also an Alsa which has weekdays and weekends ... station appears to be there. * I will need to make bus - train connections twice and need to untangle this * Guess one of my problems is that Google maps shows the little railroad tracks a little too far back from where the station is. I have actually walked out of this station (the FEVE). It looks like both Feve and Renfe share the space? Any suggestions wether I should take La Cantabrica or Alsa? Are the directions to the bus station right? Thanks!
