      8 nights in California

      California May 1, 2013 at 4:18 PM

I am flying into San Francisco in July and spending 3 nights there. I will then rent a car and head somewhere north for 2 nights (Russian River area?) to do some hiking and kayaking. I will end the holiday with 3 nights in Carmel. I was wondering what town/city I could stay in to be close to hiking and kayaking locations. Russian River and Armstrong woods seem like good areas to explore but I don't know what town to stay in.
      Thanks for any suggestions.

    • From Long Beach to Dodgers Stadium

Los Angeles May 7, 2013 at 11:05 AM

Staying at a Long Beach hotel for a convention but will be going to a Saturday evening Dodgers game. We will have a rental car so...

      - Should we drive the car up to the stadium and get general parking?
      - Or should we drive up to Union Station/Patsaouras Transit, park there and catch the Dodgers Express Bus into the stadium?
-'Or should we totally leave the car at the hotel and take the Metro Blue Line/transfer to the Red Line into Union Station/Patsaouras (to catch the Dodgers Express)?

Ease and not sitting in traffic make the Metro & Dodgers Express Bus sound good but I've been told the trip would take approx. 2 1/2 hours each way. That seems like a long time but would driving ourselves take just as long because of the traffic? Your advice would be appreciated!

    • SF to Monterey Day Trip

      San Francisco Yesterday

I'd like to do this as a day trip. I did consider spending the night, but our accommodations for the week are already paid for as a weeky rate.

I'm thinking of taking Hwy 1 down and Hwy 101 back. I don't care to spend a really long time on Hwy 1, but would like to see some of the coast. At which point would you suggest picking up Hwy 1?

And would you take Hwy 68 to Salinas to access Hwy 101 when it is time to head back to SF?

I did read that Big Sur had wonderful views, but with only one day allocated to this, I don't think that is possible.
I'm traveling with my husband and older kids (26-16). We don't plan to stop in Santa Cruz to see the boardwalk entertainment.

I'd appreciate any opinions you might have. Thanks!

How long (a) to (b) in Los Angeles/Freeway or other roads best?

      Los Angeles Yesterday

      Hi
We are visiting in June, staying in Eagle Rock and have the following on our hitlist - Santa Monica, Getty Center, Griffith Observatory and main Hollywood sights. We will have our own car but only two full days and I am worried that getting from A to B will take a lot of time as it did on one past visit. Not sure either how to group these attractions geopgraphically and split across the two days. My questions are these:
When are LA peak hour(s) for traffic and yeah, I know it is pretty busy all the time?
Are we better generally using the I and Freeways to get across the city or might other routes be less busy?
If travelling from Getty Center to Griffith Observ. Is it worth going north up 405 and peeling off on Mulholland and driving east at least as far as Laurel Canyon and dropping down on to Franklin or Hollywood Blvds, I am thinking in terms of views/more interest or will this just take forever (Google maps suggests going north and east on the 101). We want some of the journeying to be interesting if possible but Mulholland possibly aside, our main concern is to get from a to b wasting as little time as possible.

      Thanks,
      Sam from England

Hello - My husband and I are planning to spend a couple days this December for our 1st Anniversary and are looking to stay at a nice, romantic place with ocean views. I have looked online the last couple days and so far have only liked Hamilton Cove Villas. The catch is that once I book a villa its non-refundable. I am a little hesistant to book without really hearing reviews from people on the particular villa we are interested in booking (based on availability). The villa we are interested in is 2-45. Any comments/suggestions?? I would like to book within the new few days while its still available.. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks :) PT.

Hotel for one night on weekend

All of the hotels that I have contacted so far insist on a minimum two night stay on weekends. While I can appreciate that this does make sense for them, it does not fit my schedule. Anybody know of a hotel that will rent for just a Saturday night? Or does anyone want to split it, and also stay just one day on the weekend of July 16th/17th/18th? Any other bits of advice about where to stay are appreciated too. Thanks

Any advice for how to take a last minute, inexpensive jaunt to Catalina Island?

by AprilJanell Online Now Dec 23, 2004 at 3:23 PM

Hi. My name is April. I've been a member of VT for a while now. I just relocated from Austin to Los Angeles. Last year I was fortunate enough to visit Catalina Island for the first time...a friend of mine was married there. It has stuck in my mind ever since. I even hold it slightly responsible for my relocation to California. I am not able to go home for the holidays...because of work...but I do have the 25th & the 26th off. I just had the random idea today to go to the island to spend the holiday! I know it a long shot...finances are a little tight & I know I'd have to get ferry tickets and all that...find a last minute inexpesive place to stay (if possible)...but I'm a trooper, so I thought I'd check with my VT pals...network a little bit...maybe you guys know of someone who rents their place out if they are gone...who has a boat and does chartering and wouldn't mind on christmas day. This is a very untraditional holiday for me, but it doesn't have to be a sad thing...and I can't think of a better place to spend it! Please let me know if you can help and happy holidays to you and yours. I'll also check your VT travel pages if you live on the island...for tips on food and lodging...mostly lodging...the beauty is enough to take in... Thank you for your time. Sincerely, April

Is it best to set up a guided tour, or can we just do it on our own as we will bring our own equipment? Any pointers on the best place to go off the shoreline?
