Visiting Sancerre

by venter_rsa Online Now Jul 2, 2012 at 2:26 PM

Hi guys!

Im planning to visit Sancerre in the beginning of September this year. I will be traveling from Paris and want to know how I can get there with public transport. Is there a direct train to Sancerre?

What recommended wine farms are there? What suggestions would you have for us in the surrounding area?

Thanks for all the help!

There are direct trains to gare de Tracy-Sancerre. ter-sncf.com/Regions/centre/...

Choose Paris-Bercy station for your start and Tracy-Sancerre for your destination. I'm not sure where you're staying but you may have 5 km to your hotel. Taxi might be easiest with luggage. The Tracy-Sancerre station is a bit out of town across the river. There may be bus service into town. You can contact their Tourist Office for that information. tourisme-sancerre.com/main.p...

    Enjoy your trip.

    Thanks!

yes train is available as already posted. The TER is good for schedules choosing, you buy your tickets at
    www.voyages-sncf.com
although is it best to be done by car as I do.

as to wine there is the maison du vin in Sancerre with all tastings
this place explains the wines in English
    terroir-france.com/region/lo...

this tells you all the domaines or wine houses in Sancerre in French
    vins-centre-loire.com/caves-...

    my personal favorites are ,
    Domaine Henri Bourgeois
    Domaine Pascal Jolivet
    Domaine Marnier-Lapostolle
    Domaine Naudet et Fils
    Domaine Vacheron

and for a general tasting in the maison as told you above try
    Cave des Vins de Sancerre

hope it helps, a nice region and good wines.I am into it ;;)

Listen to gwened on wines. He knows what he's talking about. We don't even do tastings. We enjoy wine with our meals but taking vacation time to visit wineries is not on our list of things to do. Now a cheese factory . . . ;^)

If you don't have a car, visiting in the area could be limited. We thoroughly enjoyed a visit to Guedelon where they are building a castle using only 13th century materials and methods. It's fascinating and a 13th century-like village has grown up around the castle site . . . just as it would have then. It's about 30 or 40 kilometers from Sancerre. http://www.guedelon.fr/

You are about 45 kilometers from Bourges and it is a lovely small city. The cathedral is stunning; there are several beautiful gardens including one behind the cathedral and the Old Town is interesting. Check Jeannette1 for her Travel Page on Bourges because her mother lives nearby and she has recommended a couple excellent restaurants. Here's the town web site: bourges-tourisme.com/langues...

If you haven't visited Beaune, you might enjoy that although it's a distance but there is a train station there. All kinds of wine tasting in Beaune, heart of Burgundy. Lovely Old Town area and excellent restaurants too.

    Enjoy your trip.

It's a beautiful area and you should have a grand time.

yes there is no taxi stand at the station that serves Sancerre in tracy but you can get a taxi by asking the info desk to call one for you or
    Mobile +33 (0) 6 24 82 40 77
    Fax : +33 (0) 3 86 69 13 57

you can connect at Cosne sur Loire for navettes to sancerre too. You can write to the mayor's office in Sancerre and they should help you ,
    mairie@ville-sancerre.fr

i do those routes by car so public transport is as far as I go, you can look at sites for help such as the tourist site
    tourisme-sancerre.com/main.p...

"Just goes to show you we should read all the replies"

Yes, I do agree specially when the 10th/11th/12th replies only regurgitate the information already given - not of course counting simultaneous/ overlapping posts.
