Using Publicos & buses around Puerto Rico

Has anyone taken a Publico from San Juan to Fajardo or SJ to Mayaguez? I will be traveling to both locations and can not rent a car. Flying is an option, but if the Publico is safe & reliable.... then I'm game for saving$$. Any advice or tips on using public transportation is appreciated. Thank you.
