Hi all We in SF for several days at the end of a three week holiday to CA in July. We have visited the city quite a few times and seen all the main attractions we are interested in so this time I trying to think of new things to do! I like to know about any walks anyone can recommend or publications with city walks in. The criteria is that they are self-guided (I don't like tours)and largely within the city, that is to say I know places like Muir Woods are nice to walk in but as we are spending the first two weeks of the holiday doing serious hiking in the Sierra Nevada - various locations - when we get to SF I like to actually stay in the city (for a change). We are very fit and enjoy walking around all day so it doesn't matter how long/hilly the walk(s) are. Walks taking in as many sites of interest and preferably some off the beaten track spots especially if the walk includes nice places to eat and drink along the way would be of great interest. Thank you Sam From England.

We just got back from there and had a nice walk on the beach right under the golden gate bridge---coming from the north into San Fran, cross the bridge and take the first right---Lincoln Blvd, go 1/2 mile turn right on Langdon Ct. and look for parking across from Fort Scott-----walk down the many steps to the beach and turn right-----lovely view of the bridge, but be aware there is a nude area at the far end!

Here are details for finding the local stairs/steps, true hidden gems: sisterbetty.org/stairways/st... amazon.com/Stairway-Walks-Fr... I particularly like the Filbert Steps, a little oasis in the urban bustle: sisterbetty.org/stairways/fi... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filber...

It is too bad that you don't like tour walks. I too have been to San Francisco many times over the past 25 years both on business and pleasure trips. The last time my wife and I were there back in November, 2010 we went on an excellent 90 minute walk which covered the Financial District and its building and its POPOS (Privately Owner Public Open Spaces). Very interesting talk and went places I had never been in SF. If this entices you at all you can check out my review. It is the Rick Evans Architectural Tour. Other then that tour I have never done another one in San Francisco. One suggestion for you might be to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge and into Sausalito and then walk up above the downtown (tourist) section of Sausalito into the residential areas for some really great views of the surrounding area and San Francisco. We had a car on our last trip and drove up into the city above and walked around and even went to an open house (weren't planning on buying, but it was interesting none the less).

It's very easy to get to Berkeley by using the BART system. It's a nice university town and very different than most in the UK. If you're in that area, there's a wonderful restaurant near the campus... it's called Gather. We had a great lunch there last year. I'd also suggest maybe a tour to the Napa Valley - beautiful scenery and wine tasting.

Thanks for all the responses. Very definitely interested in the web links to the walks especially the sets of stairs as we did the .filbert and .greenwich ones and loved that. Also will consider the area around the GG although have cycled it before. We have already spent time in Berkeley and Napa. Perhaps I should have said 'very, off the beaten track but plenty here to consider so thank you all!
