I am looking for a vacation rental in SF for me (single woman) and my 3 adult children, 2 of their spouses, and an infant. One that I'm looking at is near Alamo Park (Fell St between Scott & Pierce). I'm not familiar with that area and wondering how safe it is? Is it close enough to the Western Addition or the TL to be a little dicey? I would like to be in an area where we feel safe walking to & from MUNI stops or restaurants, etc. As a reference, I have stayed in the Haight Ashbury area where I felt safe walking from there to UCSF and in Golden Gate Park during the day (for the most part) but didn't feel very safe walking the 3 blocks or so from the MUNI stop to the B&B after dark, although I did that several times & the questionable-looking people loitering in doorways didn't do anything theatening. I have stayed in Fisherman's Wharf several times and felt about the same as Haight Ashbury except maybe slightly safer at night just because there were more people around, businesses open, etc. I have also stayed on Post & Steiner (near UCSF's Mt Zion facility) and that is where I felt the least safe...just a bit too close to the TL I think.
Since no one is jumping in.... I have been to Alamo Square several times during the day and never felt as if it was unsafe - but then, I didn't feel as if MOST of SF was unsafe. It struck me as largely residential and although I remember some restaurants in the surrounding area, I don't recall as many as in other parts of SF. Still, with the good public transit many areas can be easily accessed. The square is enough distance from the Tenderloin that I wouldn't worry about it much. Take the precautions you would in any city anywhere in the world and you should be fine.

That is no better or worse in my opinion than the Haight. Most of SF, EVEN the Tenderloin is quite safe, just some places look better than others and are takend care of better by the residenes. Most of the folk "loitering" are doing so because they have no other place to go. For the most part they're harmless and trying to make it to the next day.

Fell st between Scott is fairly safe. You can walk to Divisadero st for restaurants which is a block away. You are not near the TL at all. Fell street is a busy street with lots of car traffic. I live in SF. Other than the main downtown areas and the busy restaurant areas, I don't walk around after dark.

I lived there for years and walked from my house to my bf's house in Alamo Square. I had no problems walking alone at night and felt safe. Just use your normal common sense and you should be fine. As stated above, people usually just hang out and ask for cash and are harmless.

My wife used to work in this area years ago. A few months ago I returned at night and didn't encounter any problems walking any where. The transient and homeless population of San Francisco tends to be a little more agressive than other areas of the U.S. but I would not be concerned about safety. However if you are renting a car be sure to keep any valuables out of plain sight because there are a lot of car break-ins downtown.
