Where to purchase a cheap prepaid cell phone

by bzulu67 Online Now Mar 27, 2012 at 3:36 AM

Hi everyone I will be in San Francisco May 30th and staying near to Union Square. I understand my UK phone will not work in the US as I require a tri band or quad band phone. Where can I purchase a cheap prepaid phone and recommended type with enough minutes for my three week trip to California? Many thanks Keith

Your UK phone won't work ion the US, no. Last summer in NY I asked on VT about the nearest cheapo phone shop, went there and bought the cheapest payg phone I could find. Cost me about 25USD, I think, with sufficient minutes to cover my visit. Mine is AT&T, simply because it was the cheapest available at the time I went. I think you'll need to check coverage if you will be moving about a lot. Unlike the UK, not all providers cover all areas (the US is vast, of course, so that's understandable). I had to show ID when I bought mine (photocopy of passport). I've been told that this is not an absolute requirement (at least, not in NY state) but I'm not the only person who has been asked. So take a pcopy of your passport with you, just in case. Saves hassle.

At&T has what they call "Go Phones" Not sure on the prices, but it should be cheap. There is a store on 3rd and Market . I believe it would be the closest. Market is a main st in San Francisco, and should be about a 10-15 min walk from Union Square

You can also buy a cheap no contract cell phone from Best Buy. The trac phone sells for 10.00 and is made by Samsung. They also offer one from ATT but made by Samsung for 15. There is one on 13th and Harrison as well as one on Geary Boulevard.

the verizon dumb phone is also great. (i just call it that). 40 bucks, prepay your minutes. wait. do you need to call the uk? not sure if they have a plan for that but even if you have to pay a bit extra in minutes, it doesn't matter because you can just give it away before you leave.
