by Dan301978 Online Now Mar 11, 2012 at 2:20 PM

Hi guys, I wondered if anyone had any experiences or recommendations for hostels in San Francisco for solo travelers? I very much want to meet people & so I was after places with good common rooms and that maybe organise nights out? Does anyone have any experiences or places they would recommend? Thanks very much, Dan :)

Hi Dan, I never stayed in a hostel in SF because I lived there, but I know some of the foreign grad students I worked with had friends who stayed here: http://www.greentortoise.com/ when in the City and they liked it a lot. You are right in North Beach which is the Italian neighborhood made famous in the 50s by Beat writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. It is still filled with cafes and bars and has a kind of European feel. If you stay there, make sure you go to Tony's Neapoletana pizza http://www.tonyspizzanapoletana.com/ or the Bohemian Cigar Store northbeachshop.com/pages/mar.... Molinari's is the best place to get a sandwich or picnic items: northbeachshop.com/pages/mol... All the bars & coffee shops listed on that site are good places to hang out too (Grant&Green, Cafe Trieste, etc). You are also well-positioned to get to the Marina district which is filled with younger single people and Crissy Field, where they like to go walk/exercise. As well as see everything else in SF. Check out the Mission District in SF as well. sfgate.com/neighborhoods/sf/... http://www.usahostels.com/ This place is in a more central location but I know nothing about it except that it gets fairly high ratings on websites. I had friends stay at this hostel down the coast from SF in case you are interested: http://norcalhostels.org/montara/ but this requires a car for sure to get to as well as to get back to SF. OK good luck. People are always more likely to chat with you if you are alone so don't worry, I am sure you will meet new people if you are open to it.

I have never stayed there but have seen the place and heard very good things about the Green Tortoise Backpackers Hostel in San Francisco. It is located at 494 Broadway in the North Beach area. North Beach is definitely a crazy area with a lot of bars, restaurants and activity going on at all hours of the day. According to what the Hostel is clean, cheap and a great place to party up with other young folks. I looked it up out of curiosity and it shows beds for around 35 with breakfast included. Oh and North Beach is not a good area to stay if you are looking for a pretty central location to action.

Hi! Please google San Francisco Hostel and look for hostel address on Geary Street San Francisco. Im sure you can meet good people around and it is also a good location walking distance to Union Square.
