Here's some info for you: missiondolores.org/old-missi... Also visit the park nearby (betweeen 18 & 20, Dolores and Church). It's a nice neighborhood to stroll around with lots of interesting shops, coffee shops, and restaurants.

Some intersections are more dangerous than others. After all, it IS a barrio, a slum. The locals refer to it that way. I live in NYC, so I know what a slum looks and feels like. I have lived in "gentrifying areas." The only difference is that the Mission has palm trees. Having said all that, I sure have visited the Mission by biking through it, from Market St to the end, in the daytime, everytime I come to SF (DON't call it "Frisco." They hate that.) You should, too. SInce I'm not a younger adult, and I don't drink or party anymore, I had no reason to go there at night. I"ve walked the entire Haight at night, from Golden Gate Park to Market St, and most of the Haight is a slum, too. Only the very western end of the Haight, from Asbury to Stanyan, is nice -- because it's for tourists. But remember that the Mission has a high concentration of poor people; it is a barrio. I do not think that it is a "nice " area.

I used to live not far from Misson Delores. Fine during the day but can get dicey at night depending on exactly where you are.

Mission Dolores is right in between the Mission District to the east, and the Castro to the west. Yes, both are safe to walk through - I do it regularly. I like both areas because they have very good up and coming restaurants. The Mission District is very popular with younger people (20s, 30s) for dining. some of the city's best restaurants are now there. They tend to be smaller, creative, and trendy. Castro is pretty nice with a lot of cute houses, but do be prepared that Mission District isn't as well kept up as other parts of SF. Yes, it is true, there is crime there. And yes, it is true that some intersections are worse than others. However, it has never stopped me from going there. I wouldn't walk through the Mission District alone late at night (like after 11:00 pm when things are starting to close down). If you take care like you would in any big city, you won't have a problem. I have been there many, many times and have never had a problem.
