Cool area to stay in San Francisco, Good bars/ restaurants

We're visiting San Francisco for a week in November and want to stay in a cool/ bohemian type area with lots of places to eat/ bars to go out in, interesting people. Basically not tourist central!! Any top tips for areas or individual hotels would be great. Thanks! Sarah
