Lodgings

by Robert96 Online Now May 10, 2004 at 8:51 PM

A couple of weeks ago I asked about restaraunts in SF and got alot of good advice. Thank you. I'd like to know something about the hotels in SF. We don't want to spend too much,150 a night max (maybe160). Any advice? Any places we should avoid? I've been to SF once on a day trip, so any information will be much appreciated.

I just stayed at the Pacific Heights Inn on the corner of Van Ness and Union in Pacific Heights. It's not fancy, but it is clean and the price is right. A double will cost you about100 a night. Walking distance to Union Street shops and restaurants, plus Ghiradelli Square and Fisherman's Wharf. A short bus ride gets you to North Beach or Golden Gate Bridge. Check out my VT page for hotel tip. Staff is very freindly, and price comes with continental breakfast. Good luck.

I would stay away from Fisherman's Wharf - in the end it's too busy and overpriced for what you get. I'd rather stay in Nob Hill, closer to Union Square where you can find some boutique hotels. The one good thing in SF is that the number of boutique hotels is quite large and you can always find deals going on at one or another. I know a few other VTers have stayed at the Juliana Hotel with very good reviews from what I've read in the forum (www.julianahotel.com, they have a "hot dates" promotion going on right now at79 prepaid for specific nights throughout the summer - check the website). The Harbour Court (www.harbourcourthotel.com) is also very nice - and even though it's pricier during the week, you can get some great deals on weekends in the range you mention (since it's in the Financial district, it'll be a bit more of a walk to Union Square, but a nice one - and you'll be close to the Embarcadero and a flat walk to Fisherman's Wharf bordering the water) You can also check some of the other boutique hotels at the Kimpton Group to which these hotels belong (www.kimptongroup.com). Another chain of boutique hotels is Joie de Vivre Hotels (www.jdvhospitality.com). Their Adagio Hotel is near Union Square and the theaters and is in your spending range (no AC in the rooms though, see note below), I know someone who stayed at the Commodore and liked it, although it's a bit more no-frills. Last but not least - years ago i stayed at the Handlery Hotel (www.handlery.com/sf). Great service and very friendly, and the location can't be beat for Union Square (it's in the corner). Once again great special rates - check the site - but no AC (at least on their "historic" wing) One thing to consider - in all cases, call the hotel and ask if they have AC in case that's a total requirement for you. Many hotels in SF tend not to have air conditioning as our evenings tends to the cooler side (but you can always hit a week of heat wave here and there - high 80s / low 90s) Cheers Marcelo

I'm a big fan of Hotel Juliana. See my hotel tip on my SF page. You will pay less than150 and book through Travelocity for the best price. You may even get a room for less than100. The hotel is in a good area - near Union Square. The places you would want to avoid are so far away from the Union Square area, that you really won't need to worry. It's quite a safe city. Have a great trip. Karen
