A month in San Diego.

by larrycruz361 Online Now Feb 22, 2011 at 10:28 AM

Hello everyone I posted a question earlier this morning and I really wasn't specific on it but after I graduate from High School I plan on staying in San Diego for a month. Right now I'm into my Boxing, Kickboxing, wrestling, and even MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and Muay Thai and I see that San Diego has some of the best gyms. I'm from a small town in Texas (45 minutes away from Austin, Texas) and want to visit SD. How much would it cost me for staying there for a month? I don't intend on shopping, driving all over the City or dining in fine restaurants as that would cost me tons of money.

Hi, well you need to figure out where you want to stay. If you stay downtown or along the beach its a little expensive, but if you stay just on the outskirts of SD it is cheaper. San Diego has wonderful transit systems. http://www.sdcommute.com/ My niece went to four years of college and rented all over. So the prices really vary. It is not really cheap, but there is so many things to see and do there. Here is a link to give you and idea. rentals.com/California/San-D... Or here some info on cheap hotels: http://san-diego.hotelscheap.org/ Dee

You will want to look at the SD Trolly system map and try to find a location close to a station that way it will make it easier for you to get around. The further out of downtown you go the less expensive. Generally, the further south or east you go the cheaper.

Hello, I read and responded to your first post and now see this. After thinking about your first question, I noticed in the "Penny Saver," a local weekly paper that has an on-line version, that in Chula Vista and Imperial Beach there were "rooms to rent" ranging between500.00-$600.00 a month some with and some without a deposit required. This might be the least expensive option for your month's stay. I don't know what the price of a room in the downtown area would be but you might check the on-line version of, "The Reader" or the "Union/Tribune" to see your options. Both these cities are (about 8/12 miles) south of downtown San Diego and may even have they type of Martial Arts gyms you are looking for. There is probably bus/SD Trolley service [http://www.sdcommute.com/] from most areas of both these cities that will get you to the gym of your choice. A Trolley pass, includes bus travel and runs about72.00 for over 18 year olds or36.00 for under 18/students with a transit youth card--which you might be able to get at the Transit Store on Broadway, downtown SD. Note: These passes begin at the first of the month to the end of the month, so if you arrive in anytime after the first of the month it will not be good for the last days of your visit. If you'll have your own car, that would be the easiest and quickest way of getting around, but I'll mention that San Diego is said to have the highest prices for gas in California. At the moment it's over3.50 per gallon and is expected to be over4.00 by summer. Make sure you have an idea of the mileage per gallon your car gets when deciding if that is the way you want to get around. As for food, even if the room rent does not include meals, you could shop in grocery stores for things that are nutritional and easy to prepare or things you like to eat/drink--if you know how to cook, most rooms rented will include kitchen privileges--there are quite a few fast food and Chinese places offering items for1.00, so it all depends upon what you like and want to eat, how much you'll have to spend. I'd say maybe ten dollars a day for food, give or take at the minimum. Of course, you'll have to include the cost of the gym membership/cost of the classes you want to take. So, I would amend my estimation to something like800.00 to1,000.00 for the month. Also, may I suggest that between now and this summer you practice preparing foods you like--if you don't already know how--so when you arrive, you'll have a better idea what items to shop for. There are lots of ways to cut costs for groceries, such as looking for sales, store brand items opposed to name brand items, clipping coupons and even choosing which store to buy which items from.

I answered another one of your posts earlier... but thought you might like to know that the gym 'Undisputed' on University Ave. in North Park is worth checking out if you are into MMA. Seems like a top-notch place...
