On the beach, not a hotel

by Wendy67 Online Now Feb 6, 2010 at 4:51 PM

I stayed in a resort in San Diego about 20 years ago that had little cabanas on the beach, but can't remember the name of the place. I know this is farfetched, but is anyone familiar with such a place? Also, I'm traveling to SD the first week of April with my husband and daughter and would like to find lodging on the beach, but preferably not in a hotel. I'm looking for a B&B, small home or a cabana. Any suggestions? (and thank you!)

Could it have been in Mission Bay, if so maybe it was the Vacation Village I use to take my family there. We could sail from the property and there was sand in front of our cabana. I enjoyed the Barefoot Bar for its uniqueness. It became the San Diego Princess and now is known as the Paradise Point Resort & Spa. website: http://www.paradisepoint.com/ There also was another resort I enjoyed on Mission Bay and that was the Bahia. Very similar, but not as expensive. website: http://www.bahiahotel.com/ I only list these two resorts as where you might have stayed. As for now, I know of a location over the water on a pier in Pacific Beach, right next door to Mission Bay. It is called Crystal Pier Hotel, all cottages. website: http://www.crystalpier.com/

Hey Laverne!! I didn't know Hotel Coronado had cottages. That's not the place I'm thinking of, but I'll definitely take a look. Travel, I think Paradise Point is the place. I also remember the bar there as being unique. I'll give that a peek and the other sites as well. We're taking a family road trip this year in order to show our daughter the western part of the U.S. and then spending four days in San Diego as our destination. Any ideas are welcome and thanks for the websites!

Hi Wendy, Just a note to say that the "cottages" at the Hotel Del Coronado were not there even a few years ago. They are a recent addition and more like little condos than cottages. Quite expensive I'm sure. As Larry said, the mentioned resorts are on the bayside of Mission Beach, but not too far from the ocean. Actually, I have pages on most of the beach communities and cities of San Diego; Carlsbad, Del Mar, La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, Coronado and Imperial Beach, that you might be interested in looking at for more detailed info than I can give here, but I will give a few ideas that come to mind. Your requirement of "cottage-type" and I'm guessing you mean something that is self contained with kitchen, is a bit limiting but possible. In Carlsbad, north of San Diego, there are places to rent that have a bedroom or several, with fully stocked kitchen--stove, refrigartor, plates, linens, pots etc. and is right on the beach. Del Mar has the Del Mar Motel sitting on the beach, but I think they do not include kitchen facilities. In La Jolla at La Jolla Shores there is a place formally known as La Jolla Lodge, I can't think just now of the new name but contact details are on my La Jolla page. No kitchens I think. In Pacific Beach, the only "cottages" with kitchen, on the beach that I can think of are on Crystal Pier, as Larry mentioned. I think there is a three day minimum to stay there, but in April the price should be much lower than it would be during the summer. I have a page on Pacific Beach with more detail, if you are interested. Also in Pacific Beach just north of the Pier, is the Capri. This is a high-rise building, with condo type units, kitchen included. As far as "self-contained" rentals in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach you might also consider one of the multitude of little houses that are for rent along these beaches. In Ocean Beach there is the OB Hotel located just across the street from the beach, but simply a hotel, no self-service amenities. Also in OB there are a few "cottages" to rent, but none right on the beach. Imprerial Beach also offers condo type rentals on the beach that are relatively new and seem pretty nice as well as not being as highly priced as they are further north. I hope this helps to give you some ideas, Linda The

Thanks Linda, I have been doing more research and found an apartment through vrbo.com in Pacific Beach. You're right in that I was looking for a place with a kitchen where I could cook (we hate eating out for every meal and it's expensive). I looked and looked at resorts and hotels, but really wanted the privacy that an apartment or condo provides. And further, I wanted to stay away from condos because I'll be visiting during spring break. I know you live in the area and will definitely visit your pages for ideas. Thanks for posting!
