Moving from Chicago to San Diego

by bmbelle Online Now Jan 21, 2005 at 11:47 AM

I'm considering moving from Chicago to San Diego. I love Chicago, but hate the winters. I've heard San Diego's weather is unbelievable. Can anyone tell me more about the weather (i.e. how sunny is it, avg temp, etc.)? I'm also 25, so I'm looking for a younger crowd to hang out with. Is it easy to meet people in San Diego? I've heard there are a lot of "transplants" in San Diego, so everyone is very friendly b/c you're all looking to meet people. I'm not sure I want to make the move for the fact I don't want to leave all my friends, but the weather is an obvious choice. Any advice you guys have would be great.

Weather is incredible. It is a cool and clear 65 degrees today. Earlier this week it was an unseasonable 87 degrees. Here is a site to view the historical averages: intellicast.com/Local/USLoca... Ease of meeting people. Very friendly. Especially as hang out in the various communities. Think of San Diego not within the boundaries of a 'city'. There are various communities. And there are many other cities which are near by (for instance...I live in Del Mar...which is 20 mins north of the 'city'). Good luck with you selection.

The weather is perfect in San Diego. And the people are very friendly. The women are perhaps the most beautiful in the world both in terms of looks, charm, and friendliness. It is very easy to meet people in San Diego. Hang out in the Gaslamp District on Friday; or go to the beach areas, you'll really like it.

Yes, San Diego is very beautiful and the people are very friendly as a general rule. Coming from Chicago, you might find it a bit small, though. I don't know if you've ever moved alone to a new city where you don't know anyone, or not, but if you do make the move, be prepared for some feelings of loneliness. Sure, you can meet "aquaintances" right off, but it takes a very long time (usually about a year or more) to have a handful of true friends and to really feel at home. But, if you really feel that moving is right for you, it is all worth it in the end! I have moved A LOT in my 29 yrs, so let me know if i can give any more advice! Amy

Hi, All of the response are correct, but also keep in mind that this is one of the most expensive areas in the country and public transportation is almost non-existent (remember you've go the Loop)...anyway, there are many VT'ers in the area (that includes the L.A. gang) so come out to the VT meetings and have fun...it's a great way to introduce yourself. Make the move now while you can. In a few decades you'll be entrenched - the kids will be in schools, your career will be established, you'll have remodeled the house so that it's just the way you want it - and when you start getting arthritis you'll want to move but you won't be able to. Neitzche said that at least once in his life each person should take all of his possesions, put them in a boat, sail out into the middle of a lake, sink the boat, and swim ashore stark naked. Yes, that sounds expensive, but it's a great way to avoid a future mid-life crisis ( and it gives you an excuse to go shopping! ). Dropping everything and moving to a new city forces you to learn a lot about yourself, and to choose what you really want. When you live in one place most of your life, it's very easy to let things just happen - to let the choices be made by default. Some of the unhapiest people I've known were those who let their life acrete around them like cocoons. As for your friends, you'll change so much in the next decade or two that 9 out of 10 of them won't appeal to you when you're forty. ( Yeah, I know that this sounds condescending, but it's true -ask anyone over forty ) HB

Agree. San Diego weather is perfect and I have found the people to be some of the most friendly in the US. I was at a bus stop and trying to make change and someone came up to me and offered to make change (without asking). Then got on the bus with a map and literally the whole bus saw me with a map and asked to help out and give me suggestions for dinner. Where I come from...if you take a city bus you keep to yourself and avoid eye contact. I was amazing at how friendly the people were. Must be the perfect weather.....everyone is always in a good mood!

With 12 inches of snow expected tonight, I can see why you'd want to bail out.....Yes, San Diego is an interesting town and the weather is fine. But they also have this phenomenon of June gloom, which takes a bit of fun out of summer (like: where did all the sunshine go?). If you've got an adventurous streak, by all means give it a try!

Maie the move and all your chicago friends will come visit you in February. It's probably the best climate in the US. No problem finding young crowd...it's a beach town, remember. Only town in US you can take a bus to another country. Once you get here, you will meet people fast, everybody here comes from somewhere else. There are communities here where everybody is a surfer in their 20's. When the get old or married, they move. There is a website called meetup.com where you can arrange to go to montlly meetings for people new to town. I assume you will get a job. (Not the easiest town to do so and rents here are high).

Definitely make the move to San Diego. The weather is perfect. It's "America's Finest City." I went to San Diego State for a couple of years and visit my friend who lives in Downtown when I can. It's a lot of fun. Definitely has a younger, hip crowd there at Gaslamp, but not as snobby as in LA. Downtown is booming. Now is the time to get in. My sister lives in the Chicago area and told me NOT to move there 'cause the weather sucks. DO IT!!!

Thank you guys for all the useful advice. I'm still debating, as it's a huge decision to make. Also, I'm at the age and stage where I want to change careers, but I'm not sure what career I want. So, it's hard to move out there and start fresh with no job and still afford an apartment. Rent is expensive in Chicago, so I'm assuming it's fairly comparable to San Diego. My lease in Chicago is up June 1st, so I need to make a decision before then. Maybe I'll come out for a visit soon. Thanks again!

Hi, It's very smart of you to come out here and see what the place has to offer. Once known as a military town, SD has so much more to offer. It's turning into one of the biggest biotech areas in the nation (not sure what you are looking to do) but jobs are out there. One source of information is the San Diego Union Tribune, so go to their website for info on jobs, housing, etc. http://www.signonsandiego.com Spartan
