Traveling back to Long Beach from San Diego

We're flying out from Long Beach after spending a week in SD. We are checking out of our B and B (Bankers Hill Manor) a day early to meet up with a Los Angeles friend for our last day. Any suggestions for a good place on the way back from SD, but not too close to Long Beach Airport? We're splurging on the accomodation for SD, so any clean motel/motor inn that's on the less expensive side will do. It's more about seeing something interesting for our final 24 hours. Thanks!
