How's about a meetin'?

by just4funds Online Now Jan 26, 2004 at 9:40 PM

I will be in SD 2/11 to 2/15 for business, and would be remiss if I didn't try to meet with VTers while there. I know, I know, Valentine's weekend : ( But hey! I can't be with the missus either, so let's buck-up for Team Friendship and do something different! Saturday nite would be the most convenient, but Friday evening works out as well. Who's with me?!?!

Hi Jim, So you are heading over to our wonderful city...I've sent e-mails to other VT'ers in the area to see if they are available (I'm sure as more people see this message, they'll respond). Spartan

Ooops! We're staying right downtown along the water near Seaport Village. This will be my first time in the area so any suggestions re: where to meet would help too.

You are in a pretty good area, especially near the Gaslamp Quarter. Many restaurants, places to shop etc.

Yes, that's a great area. Spartan, have you been to the Top of the Hyatt lately? I haven't been there since they've built that second tower--I assume the bar is still there. That'd be a good place to start out, anyway...lovely view!

Hi Laura, I have never been there, but that sounds like a great place to start. As soon as I start hearing from more people, I'll get the process started...hey how did this fall into my lap...lol Barry

Hi Jim, I think Laura made a great point at starting at the top of the Hyatt (for drinks and meeting everyone), but trying to figure out an entertaining place to have dinner is going to be tougher...there are so many choices. I guess since you would be the guest, what cuisine interest you? A great site to check out is http://www.gaslamp.org/dine.php which allows you to select by type...lol...best of luck :-) Spartan

Weeelllllllll, it looks like we're off to a good start! "I like what you've done here........" The Hyatt sounds like a nice starting point. As far as dinner goes, I think I would tend towards the lighter fare, so tapas, sushi/sashimi are naturals for the variety alone. HOWever...... after quickly perusing the site you recommended, Thai and Indian are delights I've not been able to sample yet, and I do like Mexican and Mediterranean as well. That doesn't narrow it down much, does it? Hmmmm, let's consider proximity to the Hyatt, lively atmosphere over subdued, and casual is comfy, so no jacket/tie required. What does that leave us with?

Hey, that place does look good. I was afraid it'd be only steaks, but looks like they have a good selection of seafood, too. And reasonable prices for the Gaslamp. The Top of the Hyatt still seems to be in existence as well. manchestergrand.hyatt.com/pr...

Just occurred to me, though...if you're looking at going to dinner on Valentine's Day (on a Saturday, no less), reservations might be in order. Hope they don't have some overpriced, special-sweetie-pie menu...

Hi Laura and Yubert, That is true about that particular Saturday...I think if we get a good head count by the end of the week, we can get our reservations in for any location. I do think that Jim mentioned he'd like to stay near the downtown area, so I think LaJolla and TJ may be out...at least for now :-)

A possible solution for TK's paradox........... : : : : bring her along! I've heard that some of the more open-minded ladies even like being taken to Strip Clubs.

TinKan and Spartan contacted me about the meeting but I will just have to be there in spirit. Being in Iraq has some drawbacks. One of those is that you don't get a lot of recreation. I would love to go to any club, any restaurant, any place else right now. I go on R&R soon so I will get to have something other than DFAC food and Burger King.

Hi Folks, Fellow VT'er Just4fund will be visiting our fair city from February 11th - 15th. Since he will be away from the missus for Valentine's Day, it would be a great opportunity to get together for another social gathering. I've posted the information on the Meetings page (February 14th/Valentine's Day), so if you are interested in attending, please sign in. Sincerely, Spartan and LJ

I'm not sure about the bottomless part, but I think it's not recommended as you're supposed to "cook your own meat." *OUCH* Spartan took charge and set up a meeting. Sadly it looks like the Strip Club isn't going to work out, unless there's a "drive-up window" or "dessert." *OUCH*.......A-GAIN Here's the address for the page with the meeting details: www12.virtualtourist.com/vt/... Don't forget to sign up using the link on that page, I think that's where the headcount will come from. Hope to see you there- Jim

TinKan and expresso...lol...the name says it all. I guess because it's the "in" restaurant at the moment, reservations were not available. Well they were, but we could only sit for 2 hours and you know how VT parties go...way longer than 2 hours. Maybe the next meeting will be at the Strip Club :-)

What if we just did the Strip Club for dinner (and stayed at the table for as long as possible), and then mosied on elsewhere for after dinner drinks/more partying? Plenty of places to go downtown, and it's not like we need a plan, since we'll all be there anyway. Spontanaeity, anyone? Laura
