Hi, I'm flying into cancun (because its cheapest) but ideally I want to get away as quickly as possible from anything remotely touristy, particularly in guatemala. Whats the best way to get into guatemala from mexico without going via belize. Is it true you can go from Cancun to San Cristobal de la casas then on to guatemala? cheers!!!
yes you can. there are plenty of busses serving these routes.

Rather than fly into Cancun, fly into Villahermosa, and then take in Palenque. Then, take the "backdoor" border crossing by boat into Guatemala, taking a bus to Flores (near Tikal). From Flores, take a local van to Sayaxche, and stay one day for Mayan ruins there, and then take another local van over the mountains to Coban. You can visit the original home of Nobel Peace prize winning Mayan woman Rigaberta Menchu near Uspatan. I describe all this in my intro for Guatemala and pages for these towns and places. This is the best way to avoid the tourist trap of the Mexican Yucatan, Belize and so on. It's cheap and very exciting.

As you will land in Cancún take a bus to Mérida and the night bus from Mérida to Palenque (I think this took me 8 hours, start at midnight) and another bus to San Cristóbal de las Casas. From Palenque or San Cristóbal as in the last great suggestion. Although you do not like touristy places those Mayan places in Yucatán are not crap or rip-off, they are fantastic and worth a visit on the way to Guatemala.
