Hi Coming to San Antonio this summer with my family. Been reading about SA from different web sites and even have a brochure, which I ordered few months ago already. A bit confused already, since there are so many things to see...But, I would like to have your opinion of which 5 attractions in San Antonio are the most interesting to see for parents and a 6 yo daughter ? The kind of attractions, that would not cost a lot of money (to buy tickets) or are just simply free of charge ?
Your child would probably enjoy the boat tour, but it does cost money. I don't remember how much, because it has been a while since my trip there. If you want to keep the cost down, you can walk along the riverwalk, see most of the sights you would see from the boat, and wave at them as they go by.

You do know that it will be hotter than Hades, right? We were there in late September a couple of years ago and found that we didn't really want to be out in the midday sun because it was just too intense and that's coming from someone who is used to heat and humidity in the summer. Hopefully you can get someone who lives there to help you answer this question, maybe they've got some good indoor activities for the midday hours. The Riverwalk is nice once it cools off a bit, it's free to walk it, the boats cost money. The Alamo is free to visit and a San Antonio must see.

If you go to the Alamo and to the closest mission on the Mission Trail (whose name escapes me), I would encourage you to review the site with your daughter before you go. That is, show her a drawing of what the Alamo site looked like originally and tell her how the remaining building is just the chapel with most of the mission under downtown San Antonio. Do the same with the mission, describing how Spanish missionaries came and built settlements, farmed inside and outside the mission walls, and used the river for water and fishing. Otherwise, I don't think a 6 year old would really understand what she's looking at. I don't know how you guys are about Tex-Mex cuisine, but you can go over to Mi Tierra for a meal and spend some time at the market next door...I personally have no interest in buying anything there, but there is a lot to catch the eye of a 6 year old... And I assume that you have already looked at SeaWorld...never been myself...but it reminds me of a wedding I went to last year. One young woman (early 20s?) was wearing rather a little less than most attendees, which showed off very well-toned arms and long athletic legs, and she was over-all the sort of person you would expect to see on stage or on film, she had such a look and presence about her, with her tanned skin and long blonde hair...then someone explained to me that at one of the SeaWorlds, she was the girl on the tip of the nose of the killer whale as the whale launched her...well, whatever you think of the act, I can tell you that up close, she's really quite an athlete...the girl, of course, not the whale ;-) Bill

Hi, San Antonio is an interesting and fun city, although the weather can be very hot. - The Riverwalk is a must, both by day and by night, and is free. - Taking a boat ride on the San Antonio River is not free, but your daughter will surely enjoy it, and so will you! - Mission San Jose: free, interesting history and architecture, free guided tours by volunteers, who also know how to make it interesting for children. - Institute of Texan Cultures: Ethnographic displays about all the various ethnic communities which make up the Texas population. Some of the activities there are especially geared towards children: actors bring to life the characters from different periods and communities. - Mexican dinner in Mi Tierra. Enjoy!! Ilan

Your daughter would most likely enjoy the San Antonio Childrens Museum. It is located only about two blocks from the Riverwalk. The museum focus on fun things for kids as well as important issues such as cultural diversity. There are a lot of interactive items that kids seem to like. For an inexpensive place to go you might want to consider the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. The gardens show off the plant diversity of Texas and included is a large conservatory. Cost for adults is like 4 and 2 for children. Its not right downtown its over on Funston Place and part of it is climate controlled for hot days.
