Hi, My husband and I will be arriving in Salzburg from venice (after a two day tour there)on 30th august morning (night train from venice). We are planning to spend till noon next day in Salzburg and then take the train to Vienna. Could you please suggest what will be a good place to stay. We would prefer something like a B&B that will give us an opportunity to stay with an Austrian family. Also, we would prefer a location that is more in the countryside with great mountain views. Of course we would also like for it to be in a budget preferably under 60 Euros - Is that a price reasonable for what we are looking for? Especially considering we will be arriving on a weekday? Also, I would greatly welcome your suggestions as to how we can spend our time in Salzburg?
Also, could you please tell me if train is the best way to get to Vienna from Salzburg. I find that the train tickets are at 47.50 euro on the obb wesite. That seems expensive for a two hour journey when I found overnight train from venice to salzburg for 69 euro....

we did round trip from vienna - salzburg and that is about what we paid. the train is extremely convenient if nothing else and probably as good a way as any. brings you into westbahnhof with excellent transfers to public transportation and the subway. with only one morning, it will be hard to see very much. you can walk around the old city on one side of the salzach river or visit the mozart house and the mirabell gardens and palace on the other ( nearer the train ) but will have trouble doing both in one morning.

We actually have one full day and one morning till noon - do you still think we wont be able to cover much?

sorry - misread you. use the full day for the old city with the hohensalzburg fortress, museums, residence and treasury, walking the shopping street getreidengasse, and the churches and salzburg cathedral. all this can be done in one day, the old city is really pretty small. use the half day for mirabell and the mozart house on the same side of the river. the mozart house on getreidengasse is a lesser choice.

Thanks!! That sounds good! I was just reading about the salzkammergut region - how far is it from salzburg? How can we get there? Do you think if stayed an additional day in Salzburg, we can cover it? And then possibly go on to Vienna? Since we wont have a car or anything, I am especially concerned about getting from point A to B..

we had an afternoon, a full day, and a morning - used one afternoon to visit the salt mine in hallein which was a most enjoyable side trip - but salzburg as described pretty much filled the other three half days. we had hoped to travel in the area but were meeting others in vienna and did not have the opportunity - hallstadt is a very popular place in the region - had we more time we would have gone, but it takes several hours by train. some of this material is on my pages on salzburg and vienna but there are lots of other superb pages to see as well, especially globetrott comes to mind but not alone.

are you under 26 years old ?? - then I have a cheaper solution for you on the train ! 69 from venice is not the ordinary fare but a bargain-ticket and the fastest connection Salzburg-Vienna is 2 hours and 45 minutes at least. --- In 1,5 days in Salzburg you can see everything including the watercastle Hellbrunn: members.virtualtourist.com/m...

@Nicolaitan: Sounds like you had a great trip :) I can't wait! We are yet to confirm dates. I just took a quick look at your Salzburg page - looks like there is a mine load of info in there. Planning to look into all the info you have up there first chance I get.. @Globetrot: We are definitely planning to visit the hellbrun castle! We are now toying with our idea to rent a car from Munich and visit Salzburg and Vienna. My husband needs to work a couple days in Germany - so we will anyway be renting a car. Since there seems quite a bit to explore in Salsburg and Vienna - we thought having a car will be great. What do you guys think? The Salzkammergut region looks so good - we want to stay there after our day's visit in Salzburg. Globetrot - do you have any suggestions for our stay in Vienna? We will probably spend a day and half there..

When you come by car you should really try to get a hotelroom OUTside of the citycentre: vho.at/novotelwest/index.de.... this hotel is at the very end of the highway, when you arrive from Salzburg, with its own carpark in front of it and to get into town you take your car (maybe a public bus as well, But I am not sure) and drive just about 1 km to the Metro-station Hütteldorf, U4 starts there and they have a large P&R- house there. Parking your car in the very centre of Vienna will be tricky and I think its best to leave the car OUTside of the area of "Kurzparkzone" , an area that is not well marked but very well controlled, when you dont have a parking-ticket, that is also mostly restricted to just 2 hours of parking from 09.00am till 10.00pm!.
