Salisbury and Bath in a day?

by bijalsa Online Now Dec 11, 2009 at 9:41 AM

Hey all,

We are planning to visit Salisbury from Wembley in end of December. We are planning to see Stonehenge, Cathedral, and Old Sarum. We were also interested in visiting Bath. The questions are-

1. Can we club both in a day?
2. If not, will it be more advisable (and economical) to stay in one of these cities instead on returning to Wembley and coming back next day.
3. If we stay in the region for couple days are there any other attractions we shouldn't miss?

Thanks in advance for your tips.

    1. No. You needwiull need most of the day to see a litle of what Salisbury has to offer. Especially at the end of December, when daylight is limited. Remember that most UK sites/sights close at 5, or 5.30 at the latest. Outdoor sites (e.g. Stonehenge, Old Sarum.....the latter closes at 3pm) close earlier in winter.

    2. Yes. Visit Salisbury etc, get the train to Bath in the late afternoon/evening, stay overnight in Bath and use the following day to explore by daylight before your return to London in the evening.

    3. You will find ample to occupy you in the area for that small amount of time. Have a look at the official Bath tourist information website here:

Daylight hours in winter are limited. At end of December it should be light by 8 am and dark by about 4 pm. Only 8 hours ! So you may need to plan accordingly.

Will you have a car ?
Using public transport means getting from Wembley to Salisbury means crossing London to reach either Waterloo station or Clapham Junction station before taking the train south west to Salisbury. The journey can take 2 hours or even more depending on time of travel. Even if you go from Wembley to Bath first, it will take about the same length of time. A train between Salisbury and Bath will take about one hour.
So I would recommend staying overnight - either Bath or Salisbury. Plenty of hotels to choose from in both cities.

Is there any possibilty of you hiring a car? if you could, I would recommend adding avebury to your list at the expense of one of the others, even stonehenge. However by public trnasport its pretty much impossible in winter, I think
