Hi! I am visiting St. Petersburg at the end of November. I would like to take a day trip to Novogord. What is the cheapest and most reliable way to get there? Aproximately how much does it cost for the transporation? I understand there are organized tours, but with prices like300, that is just too expensive for me. I don't like tours anyway and would only take one to maximize what I could see in a day that I would not otherwise be able to see on my own. I think I can save a lot by just going on public transportation and walking around town by myself. Is that a real possibility? Thanks.
do you mean Novgorod? It is quite far for a day trip... there is regional train StPetersburg - Novgorod. It starts at 8.12 am from Moskovsky railway station and arrives at 11.50. The cost is RUR 382 (EUR 9.55). The return train is at 6.30 pm Besides there are several busses (cost is RUR 300 around), starting from Baltiysky railway station. for example there are busses at 7.30am, 8.15 am and 9.30 am. The way is almost 4 hours. Last return bus is 8pm. The end of November is quite cold time for travelling :-)) maybe it is better to visit some palaces around StP such as Tsarskoe Selo, Pavlovsk, Lomonosov? All of them in 30-60 minutes from StP.

Thanks Bugulma. That's good information. I know it will be harder to travel there in Winter. We will be there the first week in December. Will the weather to difficutl for traveling?

I don't know if you would have to, but I am Australian and had to get a Russian Visa and a letter of invitation before I could set foot. I took the expensive tour instead, wasn't much dearer than the visa.

Thanks you two for the good detailed information. It looks like the bus would be more practical.
