St Lucia starter qns, local transport

Though we've been to other island destinations, including in the Caribbean, St. Lucia is new to us. Flying in from the US Midwest, with mid-afternoon arrival at the southern tip, and currently only a late return return flight, needing overnighting at some transfer point. Wondering about island distances, travel times. - if one considers the resorts at the northern tip, what is the best deal for surface transfer:100 taxi the same evening, ferry to Castries, car rental with drop off in Castries? or better to spend a first day exploring the south? - car rental: is it safe to go anywhere, maybe leave the car at the rain forest trail start? years ago I had to drive "the British way": it's OK to follow a local, but weird to be on a lonely side road and meet oncoming traffic on the "wrong side" of the road (:-) - has anybody tried a 2 island stay? like taking a ferry to French Martinique, which has better flight connections home.

OK, the Caribbean is my old stomping ground and I have done that, both working on the cruises and hangin' in the islands, - almost all of them. There are two places to stay that I can personally recommend. The Ti Kaye and the Calabash Cove. I prefer the Ti Kaye as it s a place lovingly put together by a nice family. I have recommended it before to honeymooners, and they were in heaven. Also have recommended it to people looking for an anniversary trip. The owners will make any special occasion a memorable one. That you can count on. Tell me what you think, and if you don't think this is for you, we will find others. http://www.tikaye.com/ calabashcove.com/activities/... Now, here is a website that will inform you about all there is to do and see, on St. Lucia, done by another family of enthusiasts, - Scuba Steve, and his lovely wife Shirley. They are technically a scuba diving place, and as such it is great, - but they can do almost anything that you may like to do while in St. Lucia. Take your time to explore their website, it has a lot to review. http://www.scubastevesdiving.com/ St. Lucia has two airports: - Vieux Fort (Hewanorra) at the southern end of the island (airport code UVF) which accepts wide-body jets and direct flights from the UK and USA, and Vigie (G.F Charles) at the north end of the island by Castries The travel time by road from Vieux Fort to the Rodney Bay area (which is where most of the Hotels are situated) is around 90 minutes with the route following the Atlantic coast road before entering Castries, (the capital city), by the harbour and then following the Caribbean coast road up to Rodney Bay. Travel time by road from Vigie to the Rodney Bay area is about 20 minutes. As an alternative, there are Helicopter transfers available from Vieux Fort to Vigie which take about 12 minutes flying time. It has been a while but i know that there are coach transfers available from the airport to the north end of the island. Here are the taxi prices: a2btransfers.com/en/index.as... Here are the heli transfer prices... stluciahelicopters.com/airpo... You will not be disappointed with St. Lucia. I am an island bwoy at heart, and will likely end up right back in the Caribbean. Enjoy.....d:o)

You can take a catamaran to Martinique. You need to check to see if it is running this time of year. http://www.express-des-iles.com/ If not check out Liat Air. Catamaran is the best way (in my opinion) to get there. Renting a car in Saint Lucia can be expensive -695 US/week. I've lived here for two years (Peace Corps). Dominica is fabulous. Dominica/Martinique/Saint Lucia is totally do-able. I agree with the other reply about the two places to stay and Tai Kai being the best. Typical things to do on the island are climbing Gro Piton, sulphur springs mud bath, exploring Pigeon Island, touring Soufriere, zip lines in Dennery, Joulesie Beach, walk across the rainforest to the other side of the island (guide recommended), many many other trails. You can view my blog at karensplanet dot blogspot dot com which has an array of information about the island. About the weather - this is the rainy wet season. No guarantees. Lenny is a taxi driver you can use that might be cheaper than most taxi-stlucia.com/pages/1/ind.... All Peace Corps use him. If you feel good about it, public transportation on the island is very cheap and affordable. You will be safe here - just be smart as anywhere you go in the world.

I recently flew into St. Lucia airport UVF and I had pre-arranged via email to meet a driver, James who came highly recommended by friends. His rates are VERY reasonable and he is flexible to your schedule. I recommend not renting a car if you are not comfortable driving on the 'wrong side' of the road. Your first day on the island I suggest taking an island tour from James to see all that the island has to offer and then you can either arrange for taxi or take public transportation. I stuck with James my entire trip and it was WAY cheaper than renting a car for the week. Besides being affordable, he is very welcoming, timely and knowledgeable. His email address is: tourstlucia68@yahoo.comor his phone # is: 758-712-6285. He was prompt at the airport and so welcoming. I stayed at the Coco Palm resort and it was fantastic. I stayed in a pool side room and it was great.
