Rafting on the middle fork of the American River

by HarmoniousBotch Online Now Jul 19, 2005 at 11:34 PM

Fiance and I are planning to go rafting in September. Any comments/suggetsions are welcome. In particular: 1) Are there any rafting companies that you would recommend or not recommend? 2) What are the relative advantages of staying in Auburn vs Sacramento ( or any third place )?
Thanks

Auburn is about an hours drive east of Sacramento, a beautiful place, but the drive to Sacramento can be gruesome due to traffic. You might condsider Roseville which is about 30 minutes from the city.

I rafted the American River (both South and Middle Fork) with Whitewater Voyages and can definitely recommend them to you. The Middle Fork is mostly Class IV with some Class III mixed in near the beginning and the end. The highlight of the Middle Fork is the Tunnel Chute, a Class V rapid. You can portage around it, but why bother since you paid good money for the thrill.
