You are probably better to stay at Paihia or Kerikeri, and just take the ferry across to Russell if you want to visit.

3 hours 30 is a little optimistic...getting out of Auckland can be a lengthy exercise in heavy traffic, and I think this timing must assume taking the ferry from Opua to Russell...driving to Russell round the coast will certainly take longer.
Have a look at aatravel.co.nz/main/td-calcu... and www.aa.co.nz as well as Jaap's links, and tourism.net.nz/region/northl...

Not only the driving time from AKL to Russell is optimistic, also from Russell to Cape Reinga.

I would rather say it takes you 3 hours and more from Paihia to Cape Reinga. The ferry trip from Russell to Opua and the drive to Paihia adds another 30 minutes.

Russell surely is the nicer (and more expensive) place to stay compared to Paihia. To drive to Russell and not take the ferry is only an option if you have a lot of time and leisure, or it is endless, and in particular cannot be recommended in the dark.

If you stay close to the passenger ferry terminal in Russell and your only plan for the next day is the drive to Cape Reinga you could leave the car in Paihia and take the passenger ferry.

Please note: Passenger and car ferries are at completely different locations on both sides, several kilometres apart, and not at walking distance at all.

    Note taken.

Time factor is important as we have only 7 nights. If we hire car from the airport and drive to the ferry terminal. How much is the cost 2 Russel and is the Ferry Terminal close from the airport. Can you also tell me of other important factors.

    Thanks

The vehicle ferry to Russell is in Opua - and 243 kilometres from Auckland Airport. (Driving time would be 3.5 hours in absolutely perfect conditions.)

Or do you mean: the airport in Kerikeri? (31 km; this is the next airport to Russell/Paihia)

The car ferry from Opua to Okiato (on the Russell side) costs NZ$ 10 for car and driver one way, plus NZ$ 1 for every additional passenger.

You do not save any money if you take the passenger ferry from Paihia to Russell because it costs NZ$ 6 per adult, meaning: if you are two you pay NZ$ 12 one way, and the car plus two people on the other ferry costs NZ$ 11. You just save some time.
