We will be in Rome for a couple of days in Seprember before departing on a cruise. I am looking for a good Guided tour company of all the best attractions in Rome as i have minimal time in Rome and do not want to waste it. Many Thanks.
Central historical Rome is compact and very walkable. It also has an excellent public transport system of bus, tram and Metro...and almost all its major sites (barring the ancient catacombs and the sites along the Via Appia Antica) are within that historical centre. It is actually quite difficult to 'waste' time, imo, as central Rome is stuffed full of sights/sites. There are a variety of hop-on bus services, which may meet your requirements. They are linked and detailed here: rometoolkit.com/whattodo/rom... I'm afraid I have no personal recommendations for a private guided tour company. Hopefully other Vt-ers will have suggestions...do check regularly for more replies (Vt-ers come from all over the world, so time differences affect who posts when).

You could use the hop on/off bus. This should stop near the main sights in the city. I think these buses are a way to save time in big cities.

I took a tour with "Vatican tours online." They have a seven hour all sights tour either with or without the Vatican. I did the one without the Vatican as we had done that on a separate day. The tour is for eight people max. It started with five of us, but the other three had only booked the shorter three hour tour, so after they left we had a private guide for the rest of the day. The first three hours we did Palatine hill, Forum, and Colosseum. Then she took us to a great lunch spot (price not included) and we had our choice of what to do the rest of the day. The guide was accommodating and informative. We saw the Capitol, Pantheon, other ruins, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps, Jewish ghetto, etc. Yes, we could have done all of this on our own, but it was really nice to have someone to tell you all about what you are seeing and answer all questions. I would recommend it.

When I was in Italy I used a company called Excursion Boutique http://www.excursionboutique.com/ They helped me immensely from the moment I contacted them with everything I should see and do while in Italy and even provided great recommendations! I did the Best of Rome and the Best of Florence private tours with them and I loved it! They are both full-day tours and you visit all the must-see sights. The guide was friendly and very knowledgeable about everything. The best part was by-passing all the long line ups because they pre-purchased all the tickets. They also have other tours (group and private) that range in hours but I wanted to make the most of the time I was in each city. It might seem expensive but it's well worth it!!! I also used them for a private transfer from the airport to my hotel in Rome and the driver was on time and very professional. I hope this helps!!
