by mrs51315131 Online Now Apr 21, 2012 at 2:20 AM

Will be in Rome in January for 3-4 nights. After ground floor or accommodation with a lift as my wife is in a wheel chair. Need help with pensions/B&B's/pensions within walking distance of the train station. Is there a train/bus to Fuimicino Airport Thanks guys.

There are direct trains from Fiumicino which arrive at Rome Termini station, so you will do best to find a hotel in that area..the area is known as 'Termini' and there ae lots of hotels, b&bs etc. Termini is about 25 minutes' walk from the Colosseum. Rome's Metro is very efficient but there are only 2 lines. Mero map: http://www.rome.info/metro/ Airport train times, details and fares on trenitalia.com/homepage_en.h... as before. Put in 'Fiumicino' and 'Rome' to find them. As before, look at www.booking.com and www.venere.com for accommodation. The pages will state if the hotel has a lift but it would be a good idea to check that it will take a wheelchair. Italian lifts can be very small. I stayed at the Domus Praetoria Hotel near Termini, which was excellent, but there are steps into the Reception area so I don't think it will suit: "A real find" - Hotel Domus Praetoria Tip by leics

If you google "disabled accommodation rome' quite a few sites come up that list accommodation that is suitable for the disabled. I don't know the level of aids required but this should give you a start. You will then be able to use google maps to look at the locations vis-a-vis the train station. I would say that even if the hotel is within walking distance, the roads/pavements/sidewalks might prove a bit of a challenge for a wheelchair.

There are also buses and bus shuttles to/from Fiumicino: terravision.eu/rome_fiumicin... http://www.sitbusshuttle.com/ You have been asking about buses and trains in your questions, so I assume your wife access these without using the wheelchair? Italian trains are quite high above the platforms (at least two steps), as are buses, and I think assistance with train access needs to be arranged in advance. These pages contain English info about wheelchair access for trains: trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.j... trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.j...

We do indeed...and there can be quite narrow doorways as well, depending on train type.

here is an apartment that is very near to Termini. It has a lift. I think the owners also have a B&B in the same building so that too would have a lift. romadanoi.it/romadanoi_new/c...

On booking.com and some other booking websites, you can specify the area (Termini in your case)and that you want disabled facilities. Once chosen it would still be best to contact the hotel to make sure it meets your specific needs. It will help narrow down the field. There are certainly a large number of hotels around Termini Station (we stayed there last week) and I am sure that you will find one which suits you. I would add that this area is very nice, unlike areas around train stations in many European cities. Hope you enjoy Rome. Bruce
