I liked the Domus Hotel very much: www.domushotel.com Both www.venere.com and www.booking.com are reliable sites with good mapping and honest guest reviews. They do not charge you unless you do not turn up; you pay the hotel as normal. Venere is preferable for Italy, because it lists almost all Italian hotels, with some b&bs and apartments also. I use one or the other for all my European travels. Check rates for hotels on both, because they sometimes vary.

ever thought about an alternative for a hotel, me and some friends stayed at an appartment last time we went ... http://www.rentalinrome.com/index.htm ... it's cheaper than a hotel, but still located in the city center.

Apartments are only cheaper if you are more than one person, or intend to stay for several nights. As a single traveller, they have never worked out cheaper than hotels for me. Venere lists apartments as well as hotels. I have not heard of the site you mention but there are plenty of apartment-rental sites for Rome and elsewhere.
