Yes- take a Trenitalia train to Napoli Centrale station. Then, get off the train and follow the signs for the Circumvesuviana train. It's not part of Trentitalia (so you have to buy a different ticket, which is only about EUR 4) but it's in the same station. Trains leave approximately every half hour.

thats how i travelled (as jetgirly decribed) but you may also take a hydrofoil from naple to sorrento. It will probably be more scenic. The Circumvesuviana train is pretty shady and is known for many pickpocket incidents...the ticket collector even warns you about the pickpocketers with a little flash card illustrating a pick-pocket in progress lol. It will probably be more$ than the train. The train from naple to sorrento is about an hour. the amalfi coast is amazing...have fun

Thank you for all your replies. I was planning to go to Naples for a day but I've been put off by other comments on VT re. crime so considering Sorrento instead. Grazie!
