For Ostia Antica, take the metro/train: you can do that on two, 1.5 euro BIT single-ride tickets or a 1-day BIG ticket. Here are instructions from member Leics (who has good pages on this one):

"You can use your BIG ticket to get to Ostia from Rome easily. Take the Metro to Pyramide, go up the escalator and turn left into the station for Roma-Lido. The trains are frequent, and take about 30 minutes. Simply walk straight out of Ostia station and you will come to the excavation site."

To add, here is the info page for public transit tickets in Rome:

    http://www.atac.roma.it/page.asp?p=14

A one-day BIG ticket is currently 6 euro. But you could buy two single tickets for 3 euro and just tuck the second one in your pocket for coming back: you will validate each one before getting on the metro/train at each end on your journey. If using a BIG ticket, you'll only validate once for your first journey of the day.

I know there is a boat trip that leaves from Ponte Marconi to Ostia Antica. The trip takes two hours each way and you get two hours to explore the ruins. Not sure of the cost though.

ARG! I have had so much trouble with that ATAC link! Try these:

http://www.atac.roma.it/page.asp?p=1  (click on "tickets buses and subway" on the left side)

Orvieto is too far away to be serviced by bus or Metro. You take the national train there (www.trenitalia.com - English at the top). Leave from Termini and take either a regional train or an InterCity train. The fastest trains on that line (le Frecce) don't stop in Orvieto at all.

The regional trains don't require reservations, and the InterCity trains are not likely to be filled up, so you can probably walk over to the station and take the next train, whatever it is. Note, however, that the InterCity trains are only marginally faster (maybe 10 minutes), but they are twice as expensive (15.50 euro vs. 7.50 euro), so if budget is your main concern, take the regional train. If comfort is a big concern, take the InterCity (all seats are reserved, so no standing)...

This is just an option for you if you like to take things leisurely.

I came up with this website. It should give you plenty of information.
