When i,m in Rome I would like to spend part of a day at the Forum and Colliseum. Instead of wandering thru independently I would like a guided tour. Can anyone suggest a good company please ,one that supplies an audio guide in English or alternatively good English speaking guide. Thanks
Hi - just so I understand, you would be comfortable doing these two places on your own with an audioguide? If so, do you happen to own a device that you can download MP3s to?
Otherwise, audio guides in English can be rented at both the Colosseum and the Forum.

Well i,ve only ever done one tour with audio assist and it was fine So as Forum is actualy separate and open space then Colleseum semi closed can you get audio assisted tour that includes both or do you get your audio equipment separate for each--i,ve been back in 70,s when i only used a Frommers guide book Lonley Planet

I've done Colosseum/Palatine/Forum but didn't do them on our latest Rome trip. However, it looks to me like if you choose to rent the audio guides at the sites themselves, you rent one at the Colosseum, and then another at the Forum/Palatine Hill.
Scroll down to "Educational Activities" on this web page for info about audio guide rental for Forum/Palatine (one guide covers both places):

And do the same on this site for info on audio rentals at the Colosseum:

Now, it looks to me like they both have group tours available for 4-5 euro but group sizes are up to 40 people and I think that's a little large.

AHA! I want to throw this out to some of our members who are a bit more technically knowledgeable than I am?
The OP has told me that he has an Iphone 4 and a Motorola Xoom Android tablet. Some of our member have been very happy with free, self-guided tours they downloaded from Rick Steves - of which both the Colosseum and Forum are available.

Is this a good way to go, and can he use the equipment he has to do it?

If you happen to have a guide (book I mean), and I bet you will, I consider that this will be more than enough.

Thanks Redang and actualy don,t have guide book althought i,ve had one from library and copied some important details i need. But with the audio programme installed into Motorola tablet and with audio guide connected blue tooth it becomes hands free. This may not be for every one but it is comfortable and works well for me which is what i want!!!!!

Thanks and I intend to !! Have been to Rome twice ,the last time being 1983 and have strangely never been my favourite city . But over the insuring 30 years I've seen so many other amazing ancient historical places. So I have a real thirst to go back to Rome. For whatever reason I'm inspired

I'm asking a member (Rich) who has downloaded/used some of the tours I recommended so we'll see what he says, OK?

And I've actually only used one of those when I was in Europe and that was the audio tour of the Sistine Chapel which was very good. I think I would have a hard time listening to audio tours walking around outside.

My wife and I were in Rome for a few days last year and so far on are limited 2 European trips it is down near the bottom for us. The biggest reasons we didn't like it were 1)large tour groups and 2)too more grafitti and garbage in spots we visited. We love Paris and I've heard other people say that if you love Paris you won't like Rome as much and vice-versa. It's true in our case.

But not in mine!!!! Loved 'em both but then, they're not apples to apples either. To be honest, if all I saw of Rome were the Spanish Steps, Trevi, the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, I wouldn't like Rome either (not directing that at you, Rich - I know you saw more than that). The best parts, IMHO, are not necessarily on the Top 10 list. :O)

I love Paris also but honestly feel I have not given Rome enough consideration and I feel annoyed with myself. So with 3 days at commencement of journey then three as I pass that way to Ancona Then possibly 2 days as I fly out of Rome And I'm very excited about Rome and can't wait
