RE: Driving with kids, where to stop, what to see
I'm going to guess you're driving from the Denver area to Estes Park, so I'll give directions from there. There are three choices of routes, in order of shortest to longest from downtown Denver (time would vary according to actual starting point):
I-25 north to Hwy 36 North (Boulder Turnpike) - follow 36 all the way to Estes! Approximately 75-90 minutes. Easiest route, moderately scenic, especially the descent into Estes Park.
I-25 North to 34 West at Loveland into Estes Park. Boring, but quick drive until you get into Big Thompson Canyon about 20 miles from Estes where it gets a lot more scenic. About 90 minutes.
I-70 West to Hwy 6 West through Golden to Black Hawk, Hwy 119 North to Nederland, Hwy 72 North to Hwy 7 North to Estes Park. Hwy 72 is also known and the "Peak-to-Peak Highway" and has spectacular mountain scenery en route. About 2 hours.
I wouldn't say there's anywhere in particular to stop, especially with children. It's a short enough ride that you can wait until you get to Estes to eat or whatever. Boulder and Loveland are large towns with lots of retail/restaurants. Black Hawk is a gambling town with lots of casinos, but that's not where you'd want to stop with kids. Have a good drive!
